The first report came from
Moscow in the form of a brief
announcement that all churches,
synagogues and houses of prayer
which had been previously con-
fiscated are to be returned to
the religious communities which
owned them and may again be
used for religious exercises.

French Jews Imperiled by Death
Courts Set Up by Petain
GENEVA. (JPS)—Drastic or-
ders have been issued in both
Paris and Vichy in an effort to
suppress the revolt of France
against her Nazi masters. In-
stant death will be the penalty
enacted for any act of "sabo-
tage". Jews have thus far been
the chief targets for the new
campaign of terrorism to dis-
cqurage disobedience and an up-
rising against Hitler's gauleiters
in Paris and Vichy.
The assassination of a Nazi
naval ensign in a Paris sub-
way was' made the basis for an
order by Lieutenant-General von
Schaumburg, German command-
er in Paris, threatening to ap-
prehend and shoot as many
French hostages as might be re-
quired by the gravity of any
"new criminal act".
The "Communist" Charge
All opponents of the Nazi re-
gime are labelled "Communists,"
not only in Paris but also in so-
called "unoccupied" France,
where Marshal Petain ordered the
establishment of courts-martial
to deal with civilians charged
with sabotage. The round-up of
Jews in Paris has resulted in the
detention of countless thousands,
all of whom were easy targets
because their identity papers
carry the stamp "J".
Even though the Nazis in
Paris and their satellites in
Vichy try to confuse the world
by crying "Communist Jews" to
indict those who would liberate
France, it is evident from the
widespread acts of sabotage that
if Jews are participating in the
revolt against the Nazis they
are but a minor percentage of
the total. Railway workers, road
laborers, factory hands and eve",
shopkeepers are part of the
country-wide movement to harass
and to obstruct the Nazi effort
to harness the industrial capac•
ity of France to the Nazi war
machine.

11th Arondissement of Paris, the
Nazi officials apparently forgot
to indicate that there is only
a small percentage of Jewish
residents in that ward, which
tradition describes as "a radical
center". But it is evident that
the Germans and the Vichymeti
intend to exploit any latent anti-
Semitism that may exist in
France and abroad to justify ter-
rorism to suppress France's at-
tempt at liberation.
The lead for the attack on
Jews as the "arch-instigators" of
sabotage in France has been
taken by Vichy from Paris. Pi-

LONDON. (JPS)—Two inde-
pendent reports from official and
semi-official Russian sources
reaching London indicate the
possibility that the Soviet gov-
ernment may grant complete re-
ligious freedom to all creeds, in-
cluding the Jewish.

The second report was in the
form of a statement issued by
the Soviet Embassy in London
declaring that all rabbis in So-
viet Russia have been granted
equal rights with other Soviet
citizens.
The statement further claimed
that 1,111 synagogues and 2,559
rabbis were now functioning
openly in Soviet Russia. Moscow
has three synagogues, including
the big Chor Shul which, the
government states, now has an
independent administration.
Ever since the outbreak of the
Russo-German war and the new
alliance of Russia with the demo-
cratic countries, hope has been
running high that Russia would
abandon its early militant' pol-
icy of antagonism to religion
which has caused so much bitter-
ness toward it throughout the
world.

Nazis Confirm "Retaliation"
Order
GENEVA. (JPS) — Confirma-
tion of a recent Jewish Press
Service dispatch describing" the
Rumanian government's order to
punish Jews indiscriminately for
acts of sabotage is contained in
the Boersen Zeitung of Berlin.
According to its Balkan corre-
spondent, 20 Jewish "Commu-
nists" and five non-Jews will be
shot to death for acts of sabo-
tage which the government con-
siders of "Communist" origin.

Vallat Completes Survey of Jews
in North Africa

GENEVA. (JPS)—The French
newspaper, Depeche Marrocaine,
states that Xavier Vallat, Com-
missioner for Jewish Affairs in
the Vichy government, has com-
pleted his tour of French Moroc-
co, Tunisia and Algeria, where
the pro-Nazi Commisar discussed
with all the local authorities
measures to enforce the anti-
Jewish laws of Vichy in the
French colonies.
As a first result of the survey,
the Commissioner has ordered
that all European Jews who ar-
rived in the French colonies since
1939 should be segregated into
separate quarters, thus establish-
ing the first ghettos for Euro-
pean Jews in Africa.
Reports reaching here state
the Nazis have placarded Paris
with a unique poster illustrating
the lengths to which the Nazi
propaganda machine has gone in
the effort to win over the
French population.
The poster represents Presi-
dent Roosevelt and Prime Min-
ister Churchill haloed by a Mo-
gen David seeking to drown Eu-
rope in blood and to destroy
western civilization. The inscrip-
tion reads: "The trinity of

Two-Thirds of Jewish-Owned
Land Confiscated in
Hungary
GENEVA. (JPS)—The Hun-
garian government has an-
nounced the confiscation of 600,-
000 hectares of land, two-thirds
of all land possessions of Hun-
garian Jewry. In accordance with
the already common practice of
rewarding the faithful, the area
seized has been turned over to
the "Loyal Hungarian Patriots,"
whoever such may be.
It is not difficult to imagine
that the remaining third of Jew-
ish property which has thus far
escaped the axe will not long
survive.
