Hebrew Union College Annual Includes 12 English and
Two Hebrew Essays

One of the most significant
contributions to Jewish religious
research and to the evaluation
of historical subjects is con-
tained, annually, in the Hebrew
Union College Annual, ptiblished
by Hebrew Union College of
Cincinnati. This year, Volume
XV, dedicated to the memory
of Dr. Zevi Diesendruck, is ed-
ited by Dr. David Philipson,
chairman of the board, Dr. Shel-
don H. Blank, Dr. Julian Mor-
genstern and Dr. Abraham
Cronbach, the board's secretary.
Opening with "Studies in
Deutero-Isaiah" by Dr. Blank,
this volume contains an import-
ant essay on "The Historical
Antecedents of Amos" by Dr.
Morgenstern, president of He-
brew Union College. This essay
of 246 pages is the longest in
the group of 14.
Dr. Julius Lewy of the Hebrew
Union College faculty writes on
"New Parallels Between Habiru
and Hebrew." It is a continua-
tion of a study he began in the
14th annual of the college.
"Jewish Proselyte Baptism"
by H. H. Rowley of University
College of North Wales, Bangor,
is an article that throws consid-
erable new light on the subject.
There is a brief essay, "Some
Remarks on Daniel 8.5" by Sam-
uel Krauss of Cambridge, Eng-
land.
Eric Werner of Hebrew Union
College writes on "Preliminary
Notes for a Comparative Study
of Catholic and Jewish Musical
Punctuation." Those interested in
liturgical music will find this es-
say of great value.
Dr. Jacob Z. Lauterbach, of

discusses "The Origin and De-
velopment of Two Sabbath Cere-
monies"—that of supplying fra-
grant plants for the Sabbath
table and the use of aromatic
herbs.
Students of the Messiah move-
ments in Israel will be greatly
interested in "A Messianic Docu-
ment of the Seventh Century"
by Bernard J. Bomberger of Al-
bany, N. Y.
Franz Rosenthal of Hebrew
Union College wrote on "A Ju-
daea-Arabic Work Under Sufi In-
fluence." Dr. Hebry Englander
of Hebrew Union College faculty
has an article on "Rabbenu Ja-
cob ben Meir Tam as Grammar-
ian." There is an article by the
late Dr. Jacob Mann on "A Com-
mentary to the Pentateuch a la
Rashi."
A significant article, one of
the most fascinating in the en-
tire volume, is "The Cincinnati
Haggadah and Its Decorator" by
Franz Landsberger of Hebrew
Union College. Four pages of il-
lustrations add to the value of
this essay.
The two Hebrew articles are
by Dr. Louis Ginzberg of the
Jewish Theological Seminary of
New York and by Isaiah Sonne
of Hebrew Union College. Dr.
Ginzberg comments on the music
of the Jewish communities of
Italy and the Sephardic Jewries
and Dr. Sonne writes on the
commentaries of Rashi.

Palestine's Production of War
Materials to Be Increased

JERUSALEM. (Palcor Agency)
That Palestine will be given the
opportunity to contribute a maxi-
mum share to Britain's war ef-
fort through increased produc-
tion of war materials was the
highlight of an official Govern-
ment announcement published af-
ter the return of Palestine's dele-
gates to the Eastern Group Con-
ference that convened in New
Delhi, India, on Oct. 25.
This statement has created ex-
pectation here that the recently
acute unemployment problem of
this country, in small part al-
ready alleviated through public
works, will now fade to negligible
proportions as the result of the
establishment of new war in-
dustries and the encouragement
of those already existing.
