Borghesani, Czeckowitz.
These boys are all college or university
students. Some are in normal schools, learn-
ing to become teachers. They are American
born. They are indigenous New Englanders;
they are modern Yankees.
They are not among us merely by suffer-
ance; they are our stars, our heroes. We
write about them and give prominence to
their pictures. Millions of our youth emulate
them and are inspired by them. These knights
of ski, eech, chuk, chik, iano, and etti are a
vital part of America. They are one of
America's proud emblems. Many elements
have freely blended to make up our nation.
Even Americans who are not football fans
or movie-goers—if there are any such—have
heard of the "Fighting Irish." Under Spald-
ing's picture of that famous team are such
names as Zontini, Sitko, Biagi, Saggau.
The New York Times, describing their
most recent game says: "With Steve Juzwik
leading the attack, the Irish took command.
Irish captain, Milton Piepul, kicked a field
goal." An "Irish" center was Osterman; an
end, Kovatch; a guard; Gubarnich; a back,
Garolami. Plainly, some of these "Irish"
originated in Germany, Yugoslavia, and
Eastern Europe. Perhaps Mr. Gubarnich's
grandma would be greatly surprised to learn

united by a team spirit.
They typify America. These young men,
originating in so many distant lands, are
all Americans. Comradeship makes them
Americans. A fair chance, a square deal, a
high ideal makes them Americans. Freedom
from old barriers makes them Americans.
No policeman or court or judge or law or
edict converted Toczylowski into Toz. Friend-
ship did it, the team did it, the game did it.
The American spirit did it.
At a time when old ideas of superior and
inferior races are being carried over the
world with bombs, America exalts the higher
ideal of unity through comradeship, the ideal
of discipline in brotherhood, of freedom
through loyalty. America is a nation of
team-mates, who do not let each other down.

This is good food for the spirit, for the con-
science of man, for the courage of men and
women who make up this great land called
America. It is not an argument against changing
foreign-sounding names, and the new environment
justifies the abandonment of difficult nomencla-
ture. But the spirit of the thing is what counts,
and the spirited gain in stature from the heart-
ening words of a brilliant writer who knows
America. One is tempted to respond to what Mr.
Markham writes with the brief blessing, "God
bless and protect America."
