PORTRAITS CAIRO (JPS) — Addressing a group of correspondents prior to departure for his new command in India, General Sir Archibald P. Wavell, former General Offi- cer Commanding Palestine troops, said that the Near Eastern posi- tion was more secure because of the Nazi invasion of Russia. The general responsible for the North African campaigns as well as for the Syrian invasion ex- pressed regret for the slowness with which the capture of Syria was proceeding. "If the Germans, instead of going into Russia, had put their forces in the Middle East we would have had a pretty difficult itme," the British officer admitted. But as a result of the diversion of Germany into Russia, the British now have a chance to strengthen their forces in the Middle East, to enlarge their ma- terial and also to give their hard- driven troops a needed rest, he declared.
