JEWISH VALUES REAFFIRMED The strongest defense in the present crisis lies in faith. With- out it we are lost. Rabbis and laymen, leaders in all walks of life, are recognizing this essen- tial need in world activities. And the encouraging thing is that they are beginning to demand adherence to such confidence in all quarters. Jewish leaders are uncomprom- ising in such an affirmation of faith. Robert Gordis' "The Jew Faces a New World" proves it. Other volumes dealing with this theme reaffirm it. Dr. Abba Hillel Silver's latest collection of es- says, "The World Crisis and Jew- ish Survival," gives it added value. Dr. Gordis' "The Jew Faces a New World", recently published by Behrman's Jewish Book House of New York, is one of the most effective works beckoning people to faith, to religion, to confi- dence. "Only religion," he writes, "can rescue a world that is sick unto death, but it must be the religion of the Prophet." One of the most scholarly of American Rabbis, Dr. Gordis' new book is documentary attesta- tion of his ability and learning. He knows whereof he writes, and he writes with conviction. He introduces his serious discussion of the subject in the declaration in his preface: "Moved by a life- long interest in the Jewish heri- tage and its destiny, I have felt that the impact of the world cri- sis upon Jewish life demands more than pious evocations of the past or vague apostrophes to the future . . . If we are to meet the challenge of these difficult (lays and emerge from chaos into a happier order of things, we cannot have too much of honest thinking and plain speaking." "The Jew Faces a New World" is full of plain speaking. It is replete with excellent analyses of the Jewish struggle for survi- val, of the problems created by the people's distinctiveness, of the myths and farces surrounding misinformation about us. There is excellent interpretation of the Christian-Jewish relationships, but most important of all is the con- demnation of the unfaithful at- titudes among young Jews of the past and present generations. He is confident that all is not lost, that the youth will return to religion — or will affirm it more strongly. In formulating a program for American Judaism, he emphasizes that Judaism is the culture or civilization of the Jewish people, and he describes the program in one sentence: "Judaism is the evolving religious civilization of the Jewish people." Strong emphasis is placed on Jewish contributions to civiliza- tion and on the inseparability of Judaism from democracy. The major plea lies in emphasis on faith, on deep-rooted religious feeling, on retention of courage and confidence so vitally needed in approaching the problem of the Jew. Rabbi Gordis' book is a power- ful plea for ucompromising re- affirmation of belief in Jewish values. The background of the man, his own deep feelings of the need for morale and courage, have helped him prepare a great guide book for an approach to the Jewish issues in the modern struggle for existence by Jews. "The Jew Faces a New World" is one of the very significant volumes of our day, and it should be given a very wide audience in order that as many of our people as possible may acquire the faith of this able author. With such faith, our struggle for existence will be made easier. plete Write for Booklet Olgsman's Resort South Haven, Michigan A LESSON FROM FRENCH DEFEAT Leo Lania, Who Made Miraculous Escape , from the Nazis, Writes Thrilling Adventure Story of the French Situation Leo Lania, European journal- ist who is well known to Ameri- can corespondents, has made so miraculous an escape from the "for a Glorious Vacation" Nazi clutches, and has described O Spacious, shady Lawns his experiences in so thrilling a O Tennis, golf, riding, 1,1%% 'tinning volume, that his book — "The O 1 .ing in our Dun Pto Ilion Darkest Hour : Adventures and O Children's counselor, playgrounds 0 31ost ideal Meat ion Escapes", just issued by Hough- for rest or play • ton Mifflin Co., Boston, is hailed Famous for as one of the great documents Delicious Meals dealing with the present world ZLATKIN'S crisis. Jewish Border Guards Win Offs- - cer's Praise JERUSALEM (Palcor)— With Damascus safe in British and Free French hands and with the advance into Syria continuing, the British officer commanding the notrim—special police of the Jewish settlements—gave expres- sion to his deep admiration for the courage which had kept the Jewish police at their posts through the worst of the bor- der operations that had made the original advance possible. Eric Methuen Vivian James, whose special purlieu has been the northern district since his Haifa appointment in 1922, spent the week-end visiting the various border settlements in the com- pany of a representative of the Jewish Agency for Palestine. He lingered particularly in Hanita, Kfar Giladi and Metullah, which latter settlement has on two oc- casions been reported as having been in the line of enemy fire. In these and other adjacent settlements James reviewed the activities of the notrim and ex- pressed his "deep appreciation of their courageous stand during the recent test." He particularly stressed the steadfastness of Me- tullah's policement, "who re- mained at their posts even dur- ing the most critical days." After weeks of prolonged ne- gotiations the Jewish Agency Executive has won the agree- ment of dissident right wingers to join the security councils set up by the Kofer Hayishuv to strengthen the internal security of the country. Smith of 120 E. 39th St., New York, published under the col- lective title "The World Crisis and Jewish Survival." Dr. Silver is consistently hope- ful and optimistic. He bases his conclusions on the experiences of the Jewish people throughout the ages, and he invokes the words of the Prophets in establishing a code for hope and faith in this tragic period in Jewish history. "The war which is now shak- ing our world will affect Jews and Judaism radically, regard- less of its outcome," Dr. Silver states in the preface to his vol- ume. "It will change the face of the entire world. No people and no culture will escape. It is impossible to see clearly into the future. Some opinions and judgments which are here ex- pressed will, I am sure, be re- futed and nullified by the revo- lutionary events of tomorrow. I believe, however, that the basic conclusions touching the tangled problems of our existence will be vindicated in the future as they were in the past. It is not in ig- norance of the fateful possibili- ties of the long, suspended crisis of our day that these essays were written, but rather in full recog- nition of them, but also in full and unshaken faith in the deep, quiet channels of strength which move silently beneath the surface twists and whirls of circumstance, and which bear our lives steadily onward to their appointed des- tinies." In this spirit of faith, Rabbi Silver has incorporated five es- says in his volume—essays that represent previously published ex- pressions as well as spoken lec- tures. The first essay, "The World Crisis and Jewish Survival," when it first appeared in the Hebrew Union College annual, made a profound impression upon this reviewer. It is a magnificent and deep study of the Jewish situa- tion in the world. He tells of the "spiritual resoluteness which watches divine omnipotence" in the historic experiences of our people. It is profound in thought, rich in homily, replete with ex- cellent stories from the well of Jewish culture. "The Prophet and his People," the last of the essays in this volume, is the text of the Dud- leian Lecture Dr. Silver delivered at Harvard in 1940. "The Re- discovery of Judaism" is the text of an address he delivered at the convention of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations Beauty 4 to 5 rooms. Tiled halls iron stairs. R en t $10,600. A compendium of papers he presented at the Harvard Sum- mer School Conference in 1940 is incorporated in the essay "In the Midst of Many Peoples". The fifth essay, "Israel", is a pro- found discussion of Reform Ju- daism in its relation to Jewish problems and with emphasis on Reform's attitude on Zionism. In the latter essay, Dr. Silver emphasizes that "the Jewish re- ligion is the crowning achieve- ment of our people and our su- preme gift to civilization." It is an expression of confidence that "the strength and security of our life will be retrieved," whether in Palestine or in the Diaspora. Dr. Silver's critical examina- tion of the status of Jewry again shows him to be as impressive with his written word as with his spoken. There is hardly an angle of Jewish life that is not touched upon in this book. The entire collection of five essays is written in the spirit of the concluding paragraph of the final essay—"The Prophet and his People" which was heard at Har- vard—that the "prophetic fer- ment in the soul of the race, as real in the modern as in the an- cient world," is dreaded most by the enemies of Israel and man- kind. He called this prophetic ferment "the testament of Is- rael's immortality !" His essays are excellent commentary on this historic testament. —P. S.
