DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE and the Legal Chronicle 2 Mrs. Morgenthau A Truck Driver The versatility of Mrs. Henry Morgenthau, Jr., was revealed the other day when the wife of the Secretary of the Treasury registered in Washington for home defense when the District Defense Council called upon all citizens to indicate what they might do in the "home-front army." No less laborious a job than that of a truck driver was cited by Mrs. Morgenthau as one of the tasks she would be glad to perform when the country's "un- limited national emergency" takes graver forms. But that wasn't her first choice, however, although she can shift gears, pull brakes, and tinker with a motor with the best of them. On the questionnaire asking the variety of one's capacities, Mrs. Morgenthau said that, in order of preference, she could do translations, public speaking, or handling a truck wheel. She may have been a farmer's wife for many years. but Mrs. Mor- genthau speaks French and Ger- man with equal fluency and is rapidly acquiring proficiency in Spanish as part of the Pan- American good-will program. The statement declares in part: "Three months ago, the first Jewish Aviation school in Ameri- ca was opened by the Brith Trumpeldor-Betar youth organi- zation. The Jewish national youth, as well as the Jewish and gen- eral press, gave it a warm recep- tion and manifested great inter- est in this new undertaking which, until recently, had been entirely foreign to Jews. "Although participating in the field of aviation, Jews have never accomplished niuch in actual fly- ing. The education received by the Jewish youth and the psy- chological orientation, have been great hindrances. Though we "Soar in the air" when discus- sing problems concerning our fu- ture our economic positions our rights etc., we nevertheless have never had the urge to actually ascend into the air. Even in this country, where Sport is a demi- god, even to the Jewish youth, flying has been a foreign thing to us. "The first ones to make a real start in this respect were the Betarim in Eretz Israel who suc- ceeded in turning out a group of aviators, many of whom are now serving with the Royal Air Force. The Brith Trumneldor-Betar of this country followed suit by opening the Jabotinsky Aviation School. "As citizens of this great coun- try, every young man has his first and most sacred duty to nerform, namely, to help in the building up of our national de- fense. And perhaps the most vi- tal part of this defense program is the making of thousands of aviators out of those youngsters who have not been drafted be- cause they did not reach their majority. "Everyone knows that through the C. A. A. (Civil Aeronautics Authority) thousands of Ameri- can youths are prepared for their pilot licenses. In 1940, the C. A. A. turned out over 26,000 pilots now serving as reserves in the army, 8000 of whom have al- ready become combat pilots. "The reserve pilots are trained in special schools, at colleges and various private organizations. The C. A. A. controls only the work of these schools. The gov- ernment thereby receives much help from the public without which it would have ha i to spend large stuns of money for the training of these pilots. "The Jewish Aviation League is the first Jewish institution of its kind in this country. A Jew- ish lad who has not received a college education and who does not possess $325 — the amount needed for private lessons — has been unable to secure admitance into any aviation school. We are now endeavoring to open the doors for him. No wonder that the government is sympathetic to the Betar school. The C. A. A. is giving the school its moral support and every pupil will take his examination under govern- ment supervision. "Small wonder too that hun- dreds of Jewish young men re- sponded, registered and are now ready to pursue a course of study which will prepare them for a pi- lot's license. "The first group, consisting of 25 pupils, began its course on Feb. 2. Ten of them have made such rapid progress that they were permitted on May 11, to make solo flights. In a few weeks a second group will start its studies. "Every pupil signs a pledge obligating himself to serve the United States upon completion of the course in the U. S. Avia- tion Corps. "The second portion of the pledge is with regard to Eretz Israel and consists of a promise to enlist in the Jewish Aviation Corps, with the consent of the U. S. government, in the event one is formed, with the permis- sion of England, to fight as a separate Jewish entity in behalf of the Jewish people and for a Jewish State in Eretz Israel. "When Vladimir Jabotinsky, of blessed memory, advocated a year ago the formation of a Jew- ish Army, he was opposed by all Jewry. But today, and let us hope it is not too late, all are in favor of it. The most vital part of any army is its air force. All will concede that if we had been able to supply England with 500 trained aviators, the situa- tion in Eretz Israel would not have been so precarious, the Ye- shub would not have been so de- fenseless as it is today. We are now paying very dearly for this indifference and blindness of our leaders. But it is not too late. Whatever happens in Eretz Is- rael in the next few days or weeks, we know one thing, that the war will not be over. We firmly believe that we will ulti- mately win. "Five hundred pilots as a nuc- leus of a Jewish Army will strengthen our political position and give us the right to demand that our abnormal national sta- tus come to an end. We too shall be able to demand a home. The Jabotinsky Aviation School will train the hundreds of flyers who will fight for our freedom. "Young students of Yeshivas and of other schools, workers and white collar men, Jewish youth of all classes are awaiting their turn to start flying. They are ready to ascend into the air and disperse the overhanging dark clouds. Brave, proud, loving the country they live in, they firmly believe in the sacred principles of democracy and freedom for which they are ever ready to risk their lives. At the same time they are Jews who believe that justice will prevail only when the greatest injustice of al times will be abolished, when Jews will be given their homeland. "A committee of sponsors is now in formation. Many promi- nent people have consented to serve on this committee among whom we find: Melvin Douglas, Pierre Van Paassen, Represents- The Turkish Government this week gave official permission to more than 4500 Jewish refugees to pass through Turkey to reach the Jewish homeland of Palestine. These refugees arrived in Turkey by means of two routes: ( ) through Soviet-occupied Lithu- ania and (2) through the Balkan countries by way of the Black Sea. Representatives of the Jew- ish Agency for Palestine, which receives its funds from the United Palestine Appeal, have made the necessary arrangements for the refugees to complete the last leg of their journey from Istanbul to Palestine. Zionist Institution s in Croatia Dissolved GENEVA. (Palcor)—The tol- erance which Zionist groups in Yugoslavia enjoyed despite the Nazi conquest was ended with the official dissolution of all Zion- ist institutions in Croatia. The Jewish community of Zagreb is being permitted to continue its i social welfare work under con- ditions involving the greatest suf- fering to those dependent on it. Dr. A. Licht, former president of the Zionist Federation in Yugoslavia, was seized and trans- ferred to Graz, Austria, where he is believed to be in a con- centration camp. Illustrative of the strict cen- sorship exercised over all Jew- ish activities was the suspension by the authorities of the paper Zidov because an editorial com- ment remarked favorably on Charlie Chaplin's "The Dictator". Ornstein, Famed Zionist Leader, Dead in Amsterdam Dr. Leonard Solomon Orn- stein, famed physicist and for- mer president of the Dutch Zion- ist Federation, is dead in Am- ste•dam at the age of 61. His Zionist activities were varied, ranging from absorpt;on in the problems of the Youth A liyah to responsibility for cer- tain phases of the Physics Insti- tute of the Hebrew University on Mount Scopus. Born in Holland in 1880, Dr. Ornstein was named associate professor of physics at the Uni- versity of Groningen in 1909. In 1914 he was appointed physics professor at Utrecht, and in 1920 director of the Physics Institute at the latter university. Ile was a nrolific writer in his chosen field. Kvutzoth Held Possible for U. S. WASHINGTON (JPS) —That communal farming colonies for young Jews, modeled after the Palestinian Kvutzoth, may de- velop in the United States is held by Edward A. Norman, president of the Rural Settlement Insti- tute, and Joseph Wechsler Eaton, its research director. In an article written jointly for the New Palestine, the two protagonists of the idea hold that rural farming settlements of the kvutzah type might, after the war, solve the problem of livelihood for young American Jews anxious to turn to produc- tive labor. tive Joseph Clark Baldwin, Leon Moisseiff. engineer; Mitchell Sa- lem Fisher, attorney ; Moses H.
