AIRVIEW OF CAMPUS OF HAIFA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Harvey H. Goldman, chairman
of the newly-formed Detroit chap-
ter of the Hebrew Institute of
Technology in Haifa, Palestine,
announces that the group will
meet on Tuesday evening, July 1,
at the Jewish Community Center,
at a dinner in honor of Dr.
Rudolph Samuel, visiting repre-
sentative of the institute in this
country.
Reservations for the dinner can
be made by calling Mr. Goldman
or the Zionist office, Cherry 6559.
Prof. Samuel will address the
gathering which will be attended
by a prominent group of Detroit
leaders.
Besides Mr. Goldman, officers
of the Detroit chapter include
Fred M. Butzel, honorary chair-
man; Prof. Peter Altman, vice-
chairman; Benjamin Wilk, treas-
urer; Karl B. Segall and Leon
Kay, secretaries.
Among the patrons of the so-
ciety are: Dean Collins P. Bliss,
president, Engineering Index;

numbers shall be made possible.
The graduate engineers and
master mechanics of the Hebrew
Institute of Technology in Haifa,
Palestine, the outstanding tech-
nical institution in the Near East,
play an important role in the
British war efforts.
The Iraq Oil Co., owning the
oil pipes leading from the Mosul
oil fields in Iraq to the port of
Haifa, the Palestine Potash Co.,
exploiting the saline deposits in
the Dead Sea, the Alexandrian
Harbor Authority, as well as
numerous public and private en-
terprises have been employing

graduates of that institute in key
positions.
Wartime demands on existing
industries, the creation of new
industries because of wartime
needs, have made the supply of
technical men in Palestine wholly
inadequate. This dearth of tech-
nical skill was still further ag-
gravated by the fact that many
of the available technicians en-
listed for active military service
with the Palestine Jewish units
of the British Near East Forces.
Of the 10,000 Palestine Jews serv-
ing there, about 1,600 are enlisted
in the various technical services,
such as engineering and trans-
portation. The commanding offi-
cers of that army have been
lavish in their praise of the in-
telligence and fighting qualities
of the men serving with those
units.
