The Hebrew School

And yet, out of the murkiness
of Jewish life in Rio I did find
one gleam of light, one glimmer
of hope. I found a Hebrew
School, which though housed in
three dilapidated old buildings
is doing a remarkable piece of
work.
This school, founded 20 years
ago by Mr. and Mrs. Moises
Friedman, who still head it, ac-
commodated 430 pupils ranging
in age from 4 to 16-180 in the
lower grades and 250 in the
high school. It is under govern-
ment supervision and is meagerly
subsidized by the government;
and although the stress is on
Portuguese as the national lan-
guage, Yiddish and Hebrew are
taught as well.
I saw and heard the children
and thrilled over their Hebrew,

FIDELMAN'S RESORT

For over 30 years, discriminat-
ing vacationists from Chicago,
Detroit, St. Louis and Cincinnati
have chosen Fidelman's Resort,
South Haven, Mich., as their fa-
vorite summer rendezvous for fun,
sports and relaxation.
Supplementing the natural ad-
vantages of Michigan's lovely lake
region with its miles of sandy
beaches, its fruit orchards and
gently sloping hills, Fidelman's
offers all the comforts and facili-
ties of a modern resort hotel and
every facility for outdoor sports

and indoor social activities.
The beautiful surroundings of
the 80-acre playtime paradise, the
refined, friendly hospitality that
pervades the atmosphere, the ef-
fervescent sense of well-being
which one finds, in breathing deep
the cool, pine-fragrant country
air,_ the pure luxury of enjoying
the finest American cuisine, swim-
ming, playing golf or tennis,
horseback riding, hiking, dancing,
all combine to add to the joys
derived from a stay at Fidel-
man's.
