Wake Up, America

PM, the fighting New York daily newspaper,
on June 12 devoted 13 of its 32 pages to an
expose of the Fascist front in New York and
to a demand for a Congressional investigation
of the horrible conditions which mark the spread
of Fascist and anti-Semitic activities.
The expose of PM, the existing conditions re-
vealed in its revelations, the plain-spoken state-
ment of facts presented by its able editor, Ralph
Ingersoll, in collaboration with James A. Wech-
sler, must not go unheeded.
In an editorial introduction to the complete
statement of facts, and to the telling illustra:
tions and reproduction of letters accompanying
them, Mr. Ingersoll points out that the reason
this subject is taboo in public talk is because
the Coughlins will cry that the exposure is "anti-
Catholic," and "because sonic leaders of Jewish
opinion think anti-Semitism is quelled by avoid-
ing it and regard the pro-Fascist talk as a
'purely Jewish issue.'" Mr. Ingersoll adds: "It
is not a Catholic issue and it is not a Jewish
issue and it is not a Protestant issue. Anti-
Semitism, like anti-Catholicism, is merely a tactic
of men and groups whose real ai ism the de-
struction of democracy. That is the issue."
This is a viewpoint that has been recognized
for eight years by fearless thinkers who have
analyzed the existing situation. But there are
too many who are afraid to refer to the issue,
to touch upon any angle of it, to attempt to
counteract it. It is a damaging attitude. This is
a time for fearless thinking, for fearless study
of the situation, for courageous action.
Bring the issue out in the open! Demand
that Americans should awake to the existing
dangers! Let there be action for democracy, and
not silence which must react against the rights
of mankind.

in the program of Jewish reconstructive efforts,
it is now charged that former associates of the
Jewish Bund, now in this country, are re-creat-
ing the old passions and prejudices among some
labor groups and have again formed a deep
dividing line in Jewish life. Such practices, which
must be looked upon only as the importation of
old-forgotten hatreds, do not help on the defense
front either. They serve to divide—and through
division the Nazis rule.
While the house is burning, we are arguing,
debating, stand divided. We are a pitiful sight.
The anti-Semite charges us with being a united
force mobilized to "put over" some sort of "inter-
national" scheme, but in reality we are unable to
agree even on the most elementary facts in Jew-
ish life.
"Burn, House, Burn" is the way our present
attitude could be interpreted today, and if the
situation were not so tragic we could suggest
that these theme words be sung to the tune of
"Laugh, Clown, Laugh". We point this out with
the intention of arousing our people to action,
of getting them to bestir themselves, of causing
the Jewish masses to demand unity of action.
We all hope that America will awake and
recognize the menace of Fascism. But first we,
ourselves, must awake from our slumbers and
recognize the need for unity. In united form,
we can have action; without it we become the
laughing stock of history.

Rabbi Sperka and the War

The war has certainly played its nasty tricks
on some people. But it has been especially unkind
to Rabbi Joshua S. Sperka of Congregation Bnai
David. In 1938 he prepared for a summer's trip
to Poland, to visit with his mother, and to Pal-
estine. The war broke out and he was compelled
to abandon the plan. Last month he had made all
