eluding many of his colleagues
in the House of Representatives,
lawyers and judges, jammed
New York's lower East Side to
pay final tribute to Congressman
M. Michael Edelstein, who died
of a heart attack in the House
lobby a few minutes after de-
fending American Jews of charges
of attempting to push the
United States into war.
Dr. Bernard Bergman, execu-
tive director of the Home of the
Sons of Daughters of Israel,
officiated at impressive funeral
services at the Gramercy Park
Memorial Chapel. Dr. Bergman
eulogized Rep. Edelstein as "a
martyr on the altar of pure de-
mocracy and true Americanism."
Internment was at Mt. Zion
Cemetery, Maspeth, L. I.
The 53-year-old Jewish Con-
gressman jumped to his feet
when John A. Rankin, of Mis-
sissippi, one of the most vicious
anti- Semites in Washington,
charged that "Wall Street and
a little group of our interna-
tional Jewish brothren" were
seeking to plunge the country
into war.
The New York Representative
received the unanimous consent
of the House to reply to Ran-
kin's charges and was loudly
cheered when he finished. After
his address, Mr. Edelstein, who
had been suffering from a weak
heart, left the floor and col-
lapsed in a chair in the lobby.
Rep. Rankin's attack on the
Jews and the tragic circum-
stances of Rep. Edelstein's death
evoked condemnation in the na-
tion's press.
Puerto Rican Doctor Starts Fund
for Memorial to Rep. Edelstein
WASHINGTON. — (WNS) —
Dr. Mario Julia, noted Puerto
Rican doctor and vice-president
of the San Juan City Council,
proposed that a memorial be es-
tablished for Rep. M. Michael
Edelstein as "a martyr to toler-
ance" and contributed $100 to
start the fund.
Dr. Julia, who is not Jewish,
deposited the money with the
National Cathedral Post of the
American Legion. The late Con-
gressman was a member of the
Legion in New York. The physi-
cian said that he had never met
Mr. Edelstein but was impressed
with his staunch defense of his
people.
Dr. Julia told reporters that
"due to the circumstances sur-
rounding his death, I regard him
as a martyr to tolerance. In de-
fending his own race against an
attack in the Congress he spoke
for all races and all creeds and
reasserted a principle that be-
longs among the things most vi-
tal to democratic government.
"If a memorial to Congressman
Edelstein is erected, I should
like to have it stand as the cate-
gorical answer forevermore of
the real people of America to
those in the world who raise a
barrier against fellow-humans
who happen to have been born
of a particular race or creed."
Edward Warburg likes the bal-

ease the tension.
