Pillage of European

by Nazis

JERUSALEM. — (WNS) —
The offensive against Syria by
the British and Free French
troops was greeted with great
enthusiasm by Palestine's Jewish
and Arab populations.
Jews and Arabs joined in
voicing a hope that the Allied
drive against Syria and Lebanon
would eliminate for all time the
danger of an Axis domination
of the Near East. Arab circles
were particularly impressed with
the joint declaration by the Brit-
ish Government and General
Georges Catreux, commanding
officer of the Free French troops,
pledging complete independence
to the peoples of the French—
mandated territories.

Council for Democracy Tells of Threat to American
Unity; Fomenting Group Discord Regarded
as Aid to Nazism

The death of Congressman M.
Michael Edelstein a few minutes
after he had replied to an anti-
Semitic address by Congressman
Rankin of Mississippi brought
warnings from many quarters
against the spread of bigotry.
Ao important statement was
made by C. D. Jackson, presi-
dent of the Council for Democ-
racy, who deplored the threat

Spur Defense

The latest development in the
Middle East crisis spurred Pal-
estine's defense program. It was
officially announced that 700
Palestine Jews had enlisted in
the British forces (luring May,
bringing the number of Pales-
tine youths serving with the
British to approximately 11,000.
About 600 of the new recruits
were assigned to Jewish infan-
try units, the others joining the
Jewish transport unit.
Jewish leaders stressed that
50,000 other Palestine Jews were
anxious to join in the defense
of the country but were unable
to do so because of Britain's re-
fusal to accept their services.
Sephardic Chief Rabbi Ben-
Zion Usiel, speaking to 500 Jew-
ish soldiers and officers at cere-
monies marking the presentation
of a Torah scroll to Jewish
troops in the Middle East, urged
Palestine's Jewish youth to join
the fighting forces.
The Great Synagogue in Tel
Aviv was jammed for the cere-
monies, which ended with the
singing of "Hatikvah" and "God
Save the King." Captains Rabi-
novitz and Ravitz, chaplains as-
signed to the Jewish units, of-

It would be a mistake to
permit the dramatic and tragic
death of Representative Edel-
stein to overshadow the seri-
ousness of the situation to
which he referred in his last
speech.

Representative Rankin's ref-
erences to "a little group of
international Jewish bankers"
—which brought Mr. Edelstein
to his feet in protest—was
unfortunately not an isolated
Congressional expression of a
misguided and bigoted way of
been
thinking. There have
others before him, and they
have said equally dangerous
things.

There was, for example,
Senator Wheeler, who man-
aged to pick out a predomi-
nantly Jewish list of "interna-
tional bankers" for attack in
a speech Feb. 28. There was
R e p r es entative Lambertson,
who singled out a group of
Jews as the implied nucleus
of what he called "the war
crowd." There was Senator
Rufus C. Holman, who on
March 4 paid tribute to Adolf
Hitler because "he broke the
control of these international-
ists over the common people of

Germany"; and it was clear
that Mr. Holman meant 'Jews'
when he said "international-

ists". And finally, there was

Mr. Rankin himself,

his

gibe at "our international Jew-
ish bankers".

R e p r e sentative Edelstein's
reply was truthful, but he did
not say all there was to be
said. For he simply pointed
out the facts—that there are

The Scandal of
The Referendum

By LOUIS LIPSKY

NEW YORK. — (JPS) —
Michael Kliger, 34-year-old un-
employed kosher butcher of this
city, pleaded for and obtained
the release of four men who
had beaten and injured him
when he objected to their at-
tacks on President Roosevelt
and Governor Lehman.
Magistrate Peter N. Horn
heard the case. After Kluger's
statement: "This is the great-
est country in the world. Why
should we fight each other?"
the judge said: "What this
man has done is the spirit of
America. I will suspend sen-
tence."

Abraham Srere was re-elected
unanimously as president of the
Jewish Welfare Federation at a
meeting of the Federation's board
of governors, held last Tuesday
afternoon, June 10.
Reporting for the nominating
committee, which he served as
chairman, Rabbi Leon Fram stated
that the commit-
tee prevailed
upon Mr. Srere
to retain the
presidency, a n d
declared:
"We are keen-
ly aware of the
remarkable ad-
ministrative abil-
ity which Mr.
Abe Srere
Srere has dis-
played in this im-
portant office during these criti-
cal days. We are especially con-
scious of the fact that Mr. Srere
has won the confidence of the
entire community despite its many
differences on many subjects. We
therefore feel that his experience
and insight are indispensable to
us at this difficult period in the
life of our people."

Others Elected

Revelation Made by
The Hour, Anti-
Fascist Weekly

NEW YORK. — (WNS) —
Though the rank and file mem-
bership of the violently anti-
Jewish American Destiny Party
has not yet been informed, the
dissolution of the pro-Nazi or-
ganization is imminent, accord-
ing to The Hour, usually reliable
anti-Fascist weekly.
The Hour reported that Joseph
McWilliams, Jew-baiting admirer
of Hitler and self-made fuehrer
of the American Destiny Party,
has cancelled all future meetings
of the pro-Nazi group at Astoria
Casino, the party's meeting place
in this city.

Party Rivalries

T h e anti-Fascist publication
attributed the dissolution of the
anti-Semitic party to petty rival-
ries among its chieftains, dis-
agreement concerning the A. D.
P. attitude toward the American
First Committee, and the detri-
mental publicity received as a
result of the exposure of the
criminal records of several party
stormtroop chiefs.
"The main reason, however,
appears to be McWilliams' inter-
est in his own career," The Hour
stated. "He feels that his talents
are cramped within the party
confine, that he has grown too
big for this petty fascist band.
He had confided to a few inti-
mites that he is scheduled for
'far more important work.'

Versus Lindbergh

"He pointed out this in the pres-
ent national emergency there is
real opportunity for a capable
and farsighted leader to rise to
Fuehrership in this country. And
he wants to be in the race. He
admits Lindbergh has won the
affection of U. S. Fifth Column
elements but declares, with some
justification, that he is a better
rabblerouser than the ex-Colonel.
" 'Anyway', he says, 'this war
situation must be taken advan-
tage of. Blaming the war on the
Jews is the best weapon we've
ever had. And nobody can use
it better than me. I'm known as
the Jew-hatingest man in the
land.'

The committee nominated for
re-election Clarence H. Enggass,
chairman of the board, and Fred
M. Butzel, chairman of the execu-
tive Committee, and proposed
Henry Meyers for election as one
of the three vice-presidents, to-
gether with Mrs. Henry Wineman
and Nate S. Shapero for re-elec-
tion to that office. Maurice Arons-

There is so much anxiety and
grief in the world that "The
Scandal of the Referendum of
1941" will probably not cause a
ripple of excitement in American
Jewry. There are other more im-
portant things to think about.
All eyes are turned to Syria, to
Palestine, to England. More and
more, war preparations occupy
the American mind and overcloud
the mood of American Jews. Why
