FRIENDSHIP

(Continued from Pale One)

filled with repression and horror,
refugees arriving here from Nazi-
occupied countries reported.
Although the Serbs always
demonstrated their friendliness
towards Jews, never before has
there existed such a close bond
between Serbs and Jews, the ref-
ugees said, citing as an example
the fact that Serbian women, in
defiance of Nazi orders, steal out
to the special labor camps for
Jews and bring food to the half-
starved inmates.
While all food and clothing is
strictly rationed, the refugees
stated, the Serbs, who receive
slightly larger food and clothing
allowances than do Jews, share
their portions with their Jewish
neighbors.
They told of many cases where
Serbs helped Jewish shopkeepers
to save their stocks from Nazi
confiscation. Both Serbs and
Jews, they said, endangered their
lives by concealing persons hunt-
ed by the Nazi Gestapo.
The refugees reported that the
komitaji guerilla bands, sworn to
fight Nazism, are increasing,
gaining new recruits daily. In
many parts of Yugoslavia, Nazis
travel in groups, fearing attack
by the komitajis, they said.
