IYAR 19, 5701 MAY 16, 1941 Hess's Inhuman Green Eyes The Rudolf Hess sensation proves the contention that one of the strongest weap- ons for the democracies is the inevitable rise of revolt against the Nazi terror and the internal dissention in Nazi ranks which is certain to speed such an up- rising. It is difficult to believe that the Hess escape from Germany is motivated by anything other than necessity for escape from a gang of partners in crime, each of whom is jealous of the other fellow. We recommend as one of the most im- portant descriptions of Hess the chapter "Hitler's Shadow : Rudolf Hess", in Wil- liam D. Bayles' "Caesars in Goose Step", recently published by Harper & Bros. The author, who lived under the Nazi terror for six years, states that bergh looms on the horizon as the greatest menace to American democracy, by virtue of his having surrounded himself with the most vocal anti-democratic spokesmen in this land. Now, this prediction comes true. Lind- bergh appears to be the idol of the Fas- cist-Nazi forces in America. The anti- Semites follow him around wherever he goes. Coughlin's "Social Justice" is a ban- ner at the meetings he addresses. The one-time hero of America is now the hero of the Nazis. Dr. Birkhead has rendered a great service to the cause of true Americanism with the pamphlet he has prepared for circulation by Friends of Democracy un- der the title "The America First Commit- tee—The Nazi Transmission Belt." It ex- poses bluntly and frankly the Nazi front in America. It shows the menace of the spread of propaganda made in Germany among unsuspecting masses in this coun- try. It is another of Dr. Birkhead's timely warnings against the injection of horror and despair in this country and the ham- mering in of the first wedges of disunity among the American people. Let this warning be heard, before the democratic structure crumbles under the weight of fear and the passion of bigotry. "Prior to meeting Hitler, Hess had been active politically as an anti-Semite, anti- Communist and anti-Social-Democrat. He was a member of the Thule Gesellschaf t, a rabidly anti-Semitic, nationalistic group that con- trolled a printing house and agitated chiefly through distributing leaflets and covering the walls and signposts of Munich with blood- curdling denouncements of Jews and Com- munists." Mr. Bayles quotes an important Ger- man cabinet member as having said: "I can outstare Hitler, but those green eyes of Hess are inhuman." The concluding paragraph in this pen portrait of one of the beasts in Hitler's official family, who now has the protec- tion of a democratic power, is revealing. It states: "On Sept. 1, 1939, Hess heard himself proclaimed Nazi No. 3, second in succession to Hitler. Departing from the Reichstag on that eventful morning, he did not reveal in his expression any consciousness of the honor that had been conferred on him. Perhaps because, like most Germans, he realized that the chances of his ever becoming Fuehrer were s light indeed. Hess, the silent idolizer, the modest disciple, has few chances of stand- ing up against the robust buccaneers w ho • STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL • Tidbits from Everywhere By PHINEAS J. Ad- mitting that Hess would be a highly accept- able Fuehrer, one burly Nazi commented following Hitler's announcement of the suc- cession, 'Hess would never have a chance. Himmler or Ley would shoot first while he ran home to see if his permit to carry a pistol was in order.' " The last sentence especially speaks volumes in explanation of the latest epi- sode involving this green-eyed Nazi. Even before he had a chance to assume higher powers than he had prior to his flight, he already faced the danger of gunshots from his partners' pistols. It is evident that all is not well in the internal ranks of the Hitlerites. Which goes to prove what those of us who retain faith have contended all along, even during the dark- est hours of the present war—that the evil powers are destined for defeat and that justice must triumph in spite of all the sacrifices that will be demanded of us in this fight-to-a-finish for the humane and democratic cause. Men like Rabbi Fram, when they appear as speakers before Christian groups, carry on a mission of good will and enlightenment which must bear fruit when the present cruel conflict is over. The hands of such pleaders for justice and brotherhood should be strengthened. "REVOLT IN THE DESERT" Arab-Jewish Relations A Palcor Agency report from Tiberias, Palestine, states that in furtherance of the program of cooperation and under- standing between Arabs and Jews, the Jewish Agency appointed 12 teachers of Arabic for Jewish schools in settlements around Tiberias, which is a strong Arab center. This is a commendable program as a result of which many Jewish children in Palestine are being instructed in the lan- guage of their neighbors, the correct as- sumption being that mutual understand- ing leads to peaceful relations. Without outside interference, and with the elimination of Nazi-Fascist agitators and propagandists, amity and good will between Arabs and Jews is possible. A victory for the democracies and repudia- tion of the scandalous acts of the former Grand Mufti and his cohorts will go a long way towards making such a pro- gram possible. 4■ 94.• -4.0 'by BRESSLER
