Demery's Runs Important
Paid Announcement in
the Free Press

Demery & Co., Detroit depart-
ment store, on Tuesday published
the following paid announcement,
under the heading "Correction," in
the classified advertising section
of the Free Press:
"Regarding Demery & Company
advertisement in the Free Press
Friday, May 0th, for clothing
salesmen—a portion of this ad-
vertisement read 'Gentiles Only.'
This was purely a mechanical
enrol and should have read 'Gen-
eral Selling only.' This correction
is published in fairness to our
many thousands of Jewish friends
and customers and the many Jew-
ish persons in this organization.
Positions at Demery's are held
on ability and certainly not
on racial beliefs, a Demery policy
for 33 years."
When the original advertise-
ment appeared, considerable re-
sentment was expressed in the
community. The publication of the
explanation is generally accepted
as a sincere act on the part of a
very responsible Detroit business
institution.

JERUSALEM. (WNS) —With
the tension throughout Palestine
eased by the crumbling of the
pro-Axis revolt in Iraq and the
arrival of strong military rein-
forcements in the Holy Land,
Jewish leaders speeded defense
measures to prepare the country's
550,000 Jews for all eventuali-
ties.
Contrary to reports circulated
abroad by Axis propagandists,
Palestine remains calm and
peaceful. There have been no
anti-Jewish disturbances and the
Arab population has refused to
respond to Axis appeals for a
rebellion against "Britain and the
Jews."

Introduced in State
Senate by Charles
S. Blondy

A bill "to prohibit group libel
and to provide a penalty there-
for" was introduced in the State
Senate by Senator Charles S.
Blondy of Detroit, the only Jew-

bill provides for a year's impris-

"every person, firm or corpora-
tion who shall commit a group
libel."
The bill as introduced by Sen-
ator Blondy, who represents the
5th District, reads as follows:

Dr. Jonah B. Wise, National Chairman of United Jewish Appeal, and
Lavy Bakstansky, General Secretary of Zionist Federation of
Britain, to Address Meetings Monday and Wednesday

Allied Jewish Campaign workers engaged in the important task of raising
$940,000 as the 1941 goal for overseas relief and reconstruction work as well as
for national and local educational and health institutions were heartened by the re-
port that 60 per cent of the goal was raised during the first week after the official
opening of the drive.
Leaders and workers in the drive expressed confidence that the remaining 40
per cent will be secured during the coming few days, and that an all-time record

Henry Wineman, chairman of

they were pleased with results
attained thus far, but advised
the workers not to be overcon-

reach all prospective contribu-
tors. "If all prospects are reach-

raised but will be oversubscribed,"
was the sentiment expressed.
