TO THE UNION CONVENTION

THE WHITE HOUSE
WASHINGTON

BRITISH LEADER
ON WAY TO U. S.

Will Speak in Behalf of
United Jewish
Appeal

Dear Mr. Goldman:

Lavy Bakstansky, general sec-
retary of the Zionist Federation
of Great Britain, who has been
an outstanding leader in British
Jewry's effort to provide for the
continued upbuilding of Pales-
tine and for the survival of Jews
throughout Europe during the
present war, has left London
to visit the United States. While
in this country, he is scheduled
to address campaign meetings in
behalf of the $25,000,000 war
emergency campaign of the
United Jewish Appeal for Refu-
gees, Overseas Needs and Pal-
estine. Represented in the uni-
fied nationwide drive are the Joint
Distribution Committee, the Unit-
ed Palestine Appeal and the Na-
supported here by the Detroit Al-
tional Refugee Service. They are
lied Jewish Campaign.
As Joint Secretary of the
Council for German Jewry in
England since its establishment
in 1934, Mr. Basktansky was
instrumental in making possible
the emigration of 100,000 Jews
from Germany to havens in Pal-
Thousands Line Streets in Grand Ovation to Chief Rabbi estine and other parts of the
world. Mr. Bakstansky is ex-
of Palestine; Rabbi Hirsch Manischewitz
pected to arrive here within the
Heads Arrangements Committee
next few clays.
In his tour of the United
States Mr. Bakstansky will bring
to Jewish communities a first-
hand account of the most recent
developments in England and the
rest of Europe.
Mr. Bakstansky lived in Pal-
estine throughout the World War
and until 1922, when, after com-
pleting the Herzlia Gymnasium,
he came to London to pursue
his higher education. He took
the degree of LL.B. (Law) Lon-
don University, and B.Sc. (Eco-
nomics) at the same university,
School of Economics.
In 1927 he joined the staff
of the Zionist Federation of
Great Britain and Ireland and
in 1928 he was appointed gen-
eral secretary, and later secre-
tary of the Keren Hayesod. He
has attended the last seven Zion-

My attention is called to the Thirty-seventh Council
of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations which
is planning to hold its Biennial National Convention in
Detroit from April twenty-seventh to thirtieth. Please
convey my hearty greetings to the representatives of
Jewish congregations who are meeting to strengthen the
work of religion.
The world is in great need of the Word of God at
this particular time. Our civilization, whose most precious
product is democracy, is based primarily on the Law of
God and will be renewed and strengthened only by ad-
herence to that Law.
Very sincerely yours,
FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT.

Sixth Issue of
"Bitzaron" Out

With the appearance of the
sixth issue (No. 18) of the year,
Bitzaron completed a year and
a half of publication, during which
its wealth of scholarly and liter-
ary contributions has received
wide acclaim throughout the Heb-
rew world. The only Hebrew
monthly outside of Palestine, Bit-
zaron serves as a central medium
of expression for our foremost
Hebrew writers and scholars here
and abroad. It is edited by Prof.
Chaim Tchernowitz, known also
under his nom de plume of Rav
Tzai r.
The current number includes
an essay by A. M. Berchyahu on
the Jewish people's dreams and
vision for returning to Palestine;
a daring criticism of our modern
pseudo-scholars, entitled "The
Hegemony of the Ignoramus", by
Dr. Jacob Klatzkin; a continua-
tion of Rav Tzair's popular series
of '"Memrios" with a portrait
of the versatile personality of
Nahum Sokolow, the scholar, the

publicist, the critic, the man of
politics, the Zionist leader; a sig-
nificant article surveying the
"History of Hebrew Typography"
by Dr. Israel Schapiro, of the
Library of Congress; a short story
by S. L. Blank "On Her Anni-
versary"; an evaluation by A.
Epstein of the late Abraham Soy-
er, the writer and the teacher;
personal "Impressions of Pales-
tine" by the well known author
Jacob Fichman. The issue ends
with a monthly analysis of con-
temporary events, book reviews
and a digest in English of the
more significant articles.

is only $4 a year. For informa-

ZURICH. (WNS)—Nazi Com-
missioner Arthur Seyss-Inquart
has signed a decree compelling
Jews in Rotterdam, Nazi-occu-

to repair roads and homes in
Rotterdam destroyed in last
year's Nazi air attacks.

RALPH KURLICH (OR KUL-
ESH) IS SOUGHT HERE

Information is wanted of Ralph
Kurlish or Kulesh who disap-
peared from his home in New
York a number of years ago,
leaving his wife, Lena, unpro-
vided for and has made no effort
to contribute to her support, as
a result of which she is in desti-
tute circumstances. Mr. Kurlish,
who is believed to be in Detroit,
Mich., is about 45 years of age,
5-ft. 8-in. tall, weighed 160
pounds, has black hair and brown
eyes, was a designer of ladies'
coats, was an insurance agent
and also in the fruit business.
Anyone aware of his location is
requested to communicate with
the National Desertion Bureau,
67 W. 47th St., New York City.

Among the most enthusiastic
fans of Rubin, the Palestinian
painter, are writers Sam and
Bella Spewack.

Melvyn Douglas may be an ex-
cellent comedian, but he's got a
serious side too . . . At least, one
Hollywood reporter credits him
with serious political ambitions.
