as eminent a biochemist as he is
a Jewish statesman. Prior to his
departure from England, Dr.
Weizmann had an interview with
Prime Minister Winston Church-
ill. During his brief stay in this
country, he will confer with Amer-
ican scientists on his chemical
work for the British war effort.
He will also discuss with American
leaders the most recent develop-
ments in Palestine which, at pres-
ent, occupies a strategic position
in the defense of Britain in the
Eastern Mediterranean.
During the first world war, Dr.
Weizmann served as the director
of the chemical laboratories of the
British Admiralty. At the end of
his short visit here, he will re-
turn to England to resume his
war work.
Secured Balfour Declaration
The 1917 Balfour Declaration,
whereby the British government
promised to facilitate establish-
ment in Palestine of a national
home for the Jewish people, de-
rived partly from Weizmann's
chemistry. According to John Gun-
ther, noted foreign correspondent
and author, it is a curious story:
Weizmann had been an ardent
Zionist for years. In 1916, just
before the Declaration, came the
greatest moment of his life. He
was professor of chemistry at the
University of Manchester and, in
the darkest period of the war,
was summoned by the Prime Min-
ister, David Lloyd George, to Lon-
don. There was a dangerous short-
age of acetone, which is indispen-
sable to the manufacture of high
explosives.
Lloyd George put Chaim Weiz-
mann in charge of the Admiralty
Laboratories. Weizmann set out
to discover some means of pre-
paring acetone synthetically. He
worked night and day. Within a
month, he did it. He isolated or-
ganisms from cereals and horse
chestnuts, and synthetic acetone
became a 'fact. Thus a sufficient
