SCHAKNE Presider Entered as Second-class matter March 3, 1916, at the Post- office et Dutioit, Mich., under the Act of March 3, 1879. Daily Herald a few days ago protested against the appearance in England of an anti-Semitic Polish newspaper, Jestem Polakem, and urged that it be denied newsprint for the printing of the paper. It would be an act of justice if the British cabinet whose great responsibility it is to fight for a democratic world were ac- tually to honor this protest and make it impossible for a destructive periodical, ap- pearing in free England, to preach hatred against the Jews and in this way to dis- honor the principles upon which the Polish fight for freedom is based. General Offices and Publication Bldg., 525 Woodward Ave. Telephone: Cadillac 1040 Cable Address: Chronicle A Shocking Situation While the Polish government in exile has officially issued guarantees that Jew- ish rights will be protected in the recon- stituted Polish state, which is considered one of the inevitable results of a demo- cratic victory over Nazism, a minority of Poles continues to threaten Jews and to propose that they find homelands for themselves. Thus, in a time of crisis, in a period of battle for liberty, people who are themselves fighting for freedom go out of the way to deny the same rights to Jews whose history in Poland dates back more than 1,200 years. It is a shocking situation. No wonder, then, that the Board of Jewish Deputies of England should have registered a strong protest against the action of the Polish minority and should have made demands that the group which is threat- ening Jewish freedom should refrain from advocating intolerance. The irony of the situation is that lead- ing Polish notables and members of the government that was driven from the land when the Nazis invaded Poland are now guests in Palestine and are being treated royally by the Jewish population. The Polish spokesmen who were so anx- ious to see their Jewish fellow-citizens emigrate to Palestine are now themselves enjoying the haven offered by Eretz Israel. The gravity of the situation affecting the existence of anti-Semites in the ranks of the Polish government in exile is em- phasized by the fact that the London their independence of action." And so, we have unity—immobilized. It is due to the fact that those who speak passionately in behalf of democracy re- fuse to strive for democratic action and thinking when it affects internal Jewish affairs. Perhaps out of it all will come free discussion which will eventually compel united action, in democratic form, upon all groups in American Jewry. Bnai Brith's Program Bnai Brith's Chicago convention will stand out as one of the most important Jewish gatherings in recent years. In more than one sense, this convention marked a turning point in Bnai Brith ideology. While the movement stood out for years for its defense activities, through the Anti- Defamation League, its program today is of a more positive nature. Its sponsorship of Hillel and A. Z. A., its contributions for Palestine's reconstruction, as well as other projects, like the vocational guid- ance program, gives the movement signi- ficance that supersedes by far the or- ganization's previous standing. The ovation given at the Chicago con- vention to Dr. Chaim Weizmann and the subsequent gift of $100,000 for the Mon- sky-Bnai Brith Colony, in honor of the magnetic president of the organization, Henry Monsky, placed this movement in front ranks of the builders of Palestine. Bnai Brith is to be congratulated upon the constructive program it is pursuing. WHOEVER WINS THE WAR— HE'LL WRITE THE PEACE —By BRESSLER
