CHARRON CHARRON ENGINEERING SALES 2842 West Grand Blvd. MA. 2357 Z. Tygel Launches New Public Relations Bureau A new public relations and pro- motion bureau has been launched by Z. Tygel, former executive di- rector of the Federation of Po- lish Jews in America. The bureau, under the name of Z. Tygel As- sociates, has its offices at 1650 Broadway, New York City. Mr. Tygel, who served as di- rector of the Federation of Po- lish Jews for 16 years, is also honorary secretary of the World Federation of Polish Jews Abroad, a member of the governing coun- cil of the American Jewish Con- gress, and is actively identified with various other public organ- izations. In addition to his ac- tivities as a Jewish communal leader, he is well known for his journalistic work, being a con- tributor for many years of articles on current Jewish problems to the outstanding Yiddish and Anglo- Jewish publications. He is also the author of several volumes in Yiddish and English, including a monograph on Haym Salomon, the hero of the American revolu- tionary war on whose life Mr. Tygel has done special research during the past 20 years. A. col- umn entitled "Let's Talk It Over"' is syndicated by Mr. Tygel to a number of Anglo-Jewish publica- tions and a year ago he pub- lished a book under the same title. Among the Europeans who look to Miss Manner for guidance in their English speech are three famous authors—Sigrid Undset of Norway, Karin Michaelis of Den- mark and Genevieve Tabouis of France. This time, in "The Great Cir- cle: Further Adventures in Free- Lancing," (J. B. Lippincott Co., Philadelphia), he leads us to Islam and to the Soviets, to Ara- bic and Russian peoples, to North Africa where the Islamic peoples are being stirred to revolution by spreading Fascist propaganda. It is this propaganda, no doubt, that is responsible for the con- stant references to unfriendliness towards the Jews. There is, for instance, the protest of Bou Alem, recorded in the chapter "Night in Islam." He speaks of "only those already powerful have profited— the Jews." Because all races are treated alike, Beals' host com- ments that "now the cursed Jews get a chance to seize even more than when they were kept down." Then Bou Alem persists, "Except for the Spanish and the French, the Jews are even superior now to the rest of us." This is how the poison of anti- Semitism has spread throughout the world—even among Semites who are not Jews! But a constantly suppressed Morocco organ, l'Action du Peu- ple, "sought a rapprochement be- tween Jew and Moslem on the basis of social reform and greater self-government. It charged that the various Jewish-Moslem riots of 1932, invariably originating in brothel quarters, were deliberate- ly provoked by the French secret service." How alike the hate move- ments are everywhere! Describing Istanbul, Mr. Beals tells of "Spanish Jews, speaking the medieval, alien dialect of Cer- vantes." Here you have another manifestation of ancient exper- ience: Jews, exiled from Spain, spreading the language of Cer- vantes! Those who persist in hailing Russia as a haven of glory and as lacking in prejudice will be shocked to read the following in Mr. Beals' chapter "Rouge in Russia:" "The Youth Congress, filled Moscow's streets with red ban- ners and shouting joy. An Amer- ican delegation, including several negro boys rocked through the city in a lorry, shouting. There was a parade, big banners, bands and songs and more cheers. One banner showed Trotsky, Jewish features grossly accentuated, kiss- ing the boots of international cap- italism. Pretty low propaganda! Though I waste no love on Trot- sky—who for all his talents is a vain, arrogant man—(Trotsky was alive when this was written —reviewer's note)—never in his life long did he kiss anybody's boots and, least of all, those of `capitalism.' That banner was doubly amazing in view of the scraping and bowing of the Stalin authorities to a group of Ameri- can bankers and Rotarians, the eager Soviet overtures to the `cap- italist' governments everywhere, and their Machiavelian misuse of the Communist parties in other countries to further the new 'ap- peasement' policy of Soviet di- plomacy. "Though race prejudice has been hailed as having been banished from Russia, several other ban- ners in the parade attacked the Jews viciously, probably merely a momentary overenthusiastic at- tempt to uphold the official antago- nism toward Trotsky. On no other occasion did I see any other evi- dences of race prejudice (though plenty of anti-foreignism)." "The Great Circle" is a great book. It is a description of his- tory in the making, and must rank as one of the best pieces of re- porting in our time. Italy Reduced Food Rations for Jews; Bars Milk to Jews ZURICH. — (WNS) — The Italian Government has drastic- ally reduced the food rations al- lowed Jews, it was learned here. Fascist authorities have forbid- den Jews to buy milk and limited the amount of macaroni which they may purchase. Already re- ceiving less than the rest of the population, Italian Jews are sub- sisting on starvation rations. The original reason for per- forating matzoth was to prevent the dough from rising.
