Dr. Weizmann's Visit

Dr. Chaim Weizmann's visit in this
country is of great importance at this
time. He comes to us in the midst of a
large campaign for funds for Palestine's
reconstruction. He is engaged in efforts
to aid Great Britain against Nazism, in
his laboratories, in the organization of
Jewish forces to aid the British on the
battle front, in the direction of industrial
enterprises in Palestine which provides
assistance to the British forces in the
Mediterranean.
As the outstanding Jewish leader in
the world, Dr. Weizmann comes to us at
a time when there is anxiety over the
Jewish and world positions, and he is
expected to bring a message of hope and
of cheer. In return, it is to be expected
that American Jewry will resolve to
strengthen his hands, and the hands of
his associates, in the great efforts for
Jewish liberation. May he succeed in his
mission to this land.

The Palestine Labor Drive

Detroit's Gewerkshaften organization
deserves commendation for the splendid
campaign it has conducted.
This Sunday evening's event, marking
the Conclusion of its drive, deserves to be
recorded as an occasion for observing
splendid community coverage. Next to
the Allied Jewish Campaign, the Gewerk-
shaften drive manages to reach more peo-
ple in the community than any other
undertaking. It reaches most of the or-
ganizations and their memberships and
succeeds in interesting a very large num-
ber of people in the needs for Palestine's
redemption.
The appearance here on Sunday eve-
ning of Dr. Nahum Goldmann, brilliant
statesman who is the backbone of most
of the political activities of the World
Jewish Congress, the World Zionist Or-
ganization and the Jewish Agency for
Palestine, lends great dignity and im-
portance to Sunday's Gewerkshaften cele-
bration.

Grades of Rowdyism

There are several grades of rowdyism.
Hitlerism, for example, is the height of
gangsterism. Out of it have grown numer-
ous smaller movements, each having with-
in it elements of danger to human rights
and to commonly acknowledged decen-
cies.
In this country there are elements who
take their cue from the Nazi ideology.
They are a menace not only to their im-
mediate communities in this country but
also to the entire world set-up that is in-
terlinked in an universal fight for liberty
and justice.
How are such destructive elements to
be fought in the name of justice?
To eliminate a menace it is necessary
to strike at the root of that menace. To
destroy a disease you must find the cause
of it. It is now definitely established that
the disease of intolerance and bigotry and
gangsterism—a sample of which we had
in Detroit recently—finds its nourishment
in Nazism. Therefore, it is Nazism that
must be destroyed. To defeat the Hitler
menace, it is necessary that Great Britain
should win.
The brilliant editor of the newspaper
PM, Ralph Ingersoll, in his appeal for

unlimited aid to Britain, indicates that
the quickest way to peace is an English
victory. To quote him: "The quickest way
to peace is to turn to and help England
destroy the men who, until they are de-
stroyed, will never be appeased and will
continue to force their will upon more
and more people by force of arms. The
sacrifices the British are making to fight
our enemies are greater than any man
dreamed possible before it happened. The
only reason the British need help from
the United States is that they are fighting
the resources of a continent. With the
resources of this continent to draw on, it
is inconceivable to me that they can be
beaten by Mr. Hitler's synthetic State,
with its brittle propaganda-manufactured
morale."
The time is long past when the ques-
tion of giving aid to Britain was debat-
able. This is no longer an issue to be
argued through forensic skill. It is now
a challenge to us and to all other groups
which still enjoy a bit of freedom to help
uproot the world's worst evil. That can
be done only by giving unlimited support
to the English people. It is a matter for
deepest regret that the William Allen
White Committee was not given unani-
mous support at once by the American
people in the attempt to mobilize all aid
for the British. We recognize that there
are Christian Frontists and Nazis-Fascists
and other reactionaries who will continue
to oppose such aid; but we must also
recognize that there is always an element
of treason towards democracy even in
times of bitterest crisis. Therefore it is
all the more imperatvie that nothing be
left undone to mobilize all available
strength to make possible a deathblow to
Nazism in Europe, making it impossible
for it to raise its ugly head on this conti-
nent. This is the only way of defeating
rowdyism in all its stages, in Europe
where it received its first nourishment and
in this country where it threatens to gain
root should it ever succeed in acquirng
absolute control of the European conti-
nent.

Buy Palestine Wines

Through the efforts of the Zionist
Council of Detroit, the State Liquor Con
trol Commission has again added Carmel
Wines, the famous Palestine products,
to its valuable stock.
In order to assure retention of these
wines in the Michigan stores, it is urgent
that the Jews of this state should pur-
chase the Carmel products.
Thus, trade with Palestine will be en-
couraged, Palestine will be aided in a
practical way and a real service will
be rendered in many ways.
At the present time, exports from the
United States far exceed imports from
Palestine. Carmel wines are among the
few products that have been placed on
the market here, and the purchase of
these wines will be an act of excellent
trade interchange between this country
and the Jewish Homeland. Since the
Carmel wines are rated among the best
in the world, the purchaser will also
benefit from the service he will render by
encouraging trade with Eretz Israel.

OUR FIRST DEFENSE GOAL

Vote on April 7

It is a solemn duty for all citizens to
go to the polls on election days.
At the spring election on Monday,
April 7, voters must make it their first
obligation to cast their ballots.
The selection of able officials is in the
hands of the people. If only a minority of
the voters goes to the polls, then the
selected judges and other officials will
have been elected by a minority. To avoid
this, ALL must vote.
Be sure to cast your ballot on Monday,
April 7!
