RABBI DAVID HESCHEL'S WIFE AND DAUGHTERS
To Whom It May Concern.
We wish to introduce the bearer, Rabbi David Heschel, who is
a descendant of an illustrious Chassidic family, and himself an out-
standing personality. He has been in this country for several years,
and had already made arrangements to bring over his family consist-
ing of five persons from Europe, when the war broke out.
Rabbi Heschel's wife and four daughters are now in Soviet
occupied territory, and although the United States government has
already granted them immigration visas, transportation cost at
present involves a tremendously large sum. The family can be saved
from misery and a worse fate, if sufficient funds are gotten together
within a short time.
Assistance to Rabbi Heschel in this most worthy cause should
be regarded as a very commendable form of Zedakah.
Very truly yours,
COUNCIL OF ORTHODOX RABBIS,
Rabbi Moses Fischer, Chairman.
ing of the Jewish Home for Aged
will be held at 2 p. m. on Sun-
day, March 30, at the home, Bur-
lingame and Petoskey. Reports
will be submitted by the officers
and the superintendent of the
home, and directors will be elected.
More than 1,000 delegates, rep-
resentatives of hundreds of Jew-
ish organizations in the metro-
politan area of New York, voted
Sunday afternoon, at a confer-
ence at the Hotel Edison, to sup-
port the American Jewish Con-
gress in its program for the
post-war reconstruction of Jew-
ish life in Europe, to be formu-
lated through a Research Insti-
tute which has been established
in the City of New York.
The conference also voted to
establish a permanent organiza-
tion of fraternal bodies to be
known as the Metropolitan Coun-
cil of the American Jewish Con-
gress. Hon, Edward S. Silver
was elected chairman.
Announcement of this Institute
was made by Dr. Stephen S.
Wise, president of the. American
Jewish Congress, while the actual
program to which the institute
is dedicated, was developed in
the first public address in this
country by the director of the
institute, Dr. Jacob Robinson,
formerly of Kaunas, Lithuania,
where he was the Counsel to the
Lithuanian Government at the
Court of International Justice at
the Hague.
The first all-American Jewish

conference in history is to be
held in July, 1941, in Montevideo,
Uruguay, Dr. Wise further an-
nounced. This meeting of repre-
sentatives of Jewish communities
in the 22 countries of North and
South America will have a three-
fold purpose, Dr. Wise said: To
strengthen the bond inherent in
the American way of life; to
unite all Jews in the Western
Hemisphere in a common pro-
gram of aid for Jews throughout
the world; and to mobilize sup-
port for a Jewish Commonwealth
of Palestine after the war.
Speakers at the Conference
also included Dr. Samuel Mar-
goshes, editor of the Day, and
the Hon. Samuel Goldstein, who
presided.
Dr. Wise made known that the
Institute was established under
the auspices of the American Jew-
ish Congress and the World Jew-
ish Congress and will have the
two-fold task of dealing with (1)
the present-day conditions aris-
ing out of the war, insofar as
they affect Jews; and (2) to
present proposals for the guar-
antee of rights and the assur-
ance of equality at a forthcoming
peace conference.
In order to meet jointly with
the Junior Council, the Detroit
Section, National Council of
Jewish Women, will hold its next
meeting on Sunday afternoon,
April 6, at 2:30 p. m., in the
social hall at Temple Beth El.
The program will be provided
by both groups. Junior Council
will show motion pictures of the
Day Nursery which it sponsors
with the aid of the W. P. A.
Senior members will present a
one act play, "Never Too Old,"
by Colin Clements and Lawrence
Ryerson. The cast for this com-
edy production consists of Mrs.
Harry Becker, Mrs. Louis Smil-
ansky, Mrs. Harry Cohen and
Miss Helene Lindenbaum. Mrs.
Theodore Kelter is the director,
and Miss Louise Shiffman is in
charge of properties.
Mothers of junior members
and daughters of senior members
from the age of 14, as well as
husbands will be welcome at this
meeting. Tea will be served fol-
lowing the program.
