S. 19 Nelson Eddy, eminent Ameri- Jewish Agricultural Society Re- can baritone, will appear in con- ports Progress; Refugees ceit here at the Masonic Audi- Turn to the Soil torium on Wednesday evening, Dr. Gabriel Davidson, manag- ing director of the Jewish Agri- cultural Society, has issued a report showing that the Jewish farmers in the United States are making steady progress. The re- port deals with the work of the Jewish Agricultural Society in its efforts to expand and strengthen the American Jewish farming class. The report also tells of the work the society is doing to re- habilitate farm minded refugees and help get them established on farms. The society's farm loan de- partment has granted since its founding 13,467 farm loans ag- gregating $8,144,000 to farmers in 40 states. Last year 401 loans were made to farmers in 12 states. The society's farm settlement department guides and aids Jews who desire to go into farm- ing. Last year 1,420 people sought the society's services and 158 families comprising about 750 individuals were settled on farms in six states. Its work for refugees has grown rapidly and the society reports that there are already fairly compact refu- gee settlements in parts of New Jersey, New York and Connecti- cut. So far, 226 refugee families representing upward of 1,200 in- dividuals have been settled on farms in Connecticut, Mas- sachusetts, New York, New Jer- sey, New Hampshire, Pennsyl- vania, Michigan, Missouri, and Florida. Last year 91 refugees were established on farms in seven states. The society has already granted $230,664 in loans to refugee farmers. The society's refugee training farm, established at Bound Brook early in 1940, was attended by 106 trainees. The society's agricultural edu- cation department maintains a staff of agricultural experts who bring to the Jewish farmer agri- cultural information on every conceivable branch of farming. Durinp. 1940 these extension ex- perts made 2,980 farm visits, held 123 meetings and demon- strations attended by over 6,200 farmers. The society conducts agricul- tural night classes for farm as- pirants in New York City and in Chicago and publishes the Jewish Farmer, the pioneer Yiddish agri- cultural magazine. It also main- tains a purchasing service for individual farmers and farm co- operatives. Rev. S.
