A recent arrival in this country
is Dr. Eduard Bloch of Linz,
Austria, which used to be Hitler's
home town . . . Dr. Bloch has the
unenviable distinction of having
cured the future Fuehrer of var-
ious childhood ailments, and
gratis at that . . . Although on
Hitler's specific orders, the Nazis
didn't molest Dr. Bloch at all, he
professed not to stay in his old
home after the "new order"
marched in.

Light on Jewish Position
Jewish readers will find a great
deal of light thrown on the posi-
lion of the Jew in Germany in
the pages of the Dodd book. At
the very outset, when he was
called upon to assume his post
in Berlin, President Roosevelt
told Dr. Dodd, who was a profes-
sor of history at the University
of Chicago and who had studied
in Germany : "The German au
thorities are treating the Jews
shamefully and the Jews in this
country are greatly excited. But
this is also not a governmental
affair. We can do nothing except
for American citizens who hap-
pen to be made victims. We must
protect them, and whatever we
can do to moderate the - general
persecution by unofficial and per-
sonal influence ought to be done."
Before leaving for Germany,
LATE WM. E. DODD
Prof. Dodd conferred with a

Under date of March 7,
1934, Dr. Dodd records a con-
versation with Adolf Hitler.
He raised various issues, relat-
to propaganda. "I then
ing
spoke of the pamphlets call-
ing upon all Germans in the
United States, as elsewhere, to
remember that they are and
must always remain Germans,
almost like the law of 1913
claiming double allegiance for
Germans. He at once said with
emotion: 'Ach, that is all Jew-
ish lies; if I find out who does
that I will put him out of the
country at once.'
"I then explained the Jewish
situation as existing in New
York where the mock trial was
to be held, but did not men-
tion the subject itself. He
broke in frequently with such
expressions as 'Damn the
Jews' and insisted that if agi-
tation continued in the outside
world, he would make an end
of all Jews in Germany. He
spoke of having saved Germany
from the Communists and said
59 per cent of the o fficials of
Russia were Jews. I privately
questioned his figures but said:
Sovietism is no longer a men-
ace. He shook his head. I
added that the Communists had
polled only a few votes in the
United States in 1932. He de-
clared loudly: 'Happy country.
Your people seem to be so
sensible in this respect. "
Some of the outstanding lier-
sonalities of our time are named
in the book, and many Jews are
referred to as having suffered,
by dismissal from their jobs or
otherwise, for being Jews. Rabbi
Morris Lazeiron of Baltimore
made many efforts to intercede
for the Jews, but he was finally
advised not to jeopardize his own
life and to leave the country be-
cause it was useless to try to
do anything in defense of the
Jews. He was told Hitler is fana-
tical and is determined to put
all Jews out of Germany and to
confiscate their property.
The Dodd Diary will be a
MUST book for students of his-
tory for many years to come.
In viewing the present war and
the situation in Germany covered
by this great book, Dodd's work
will remain an indispensable rec•
ord of Nazi history.
