"You have ignored my courteous letter of
December 11, just as, when I heard your
name, I expected you to do. An American,
Englishman, Frenchman, yes even a Nazi Ger-
man, would ordinarily be expected to recog-
nize such an obligation.
The damage to my car too, was the, result
of a typical and obnoxious characteristic.
Other people are more thoughtful of the
rights of their fellow man. Their rule is not
to aggressively push for unfair advantage as
your daughter, as reported by three wit-
nesses, did when she ran her car into my
car to gain a parking space she saw another
motorist was about to occupy. A little cour-
tesy here would have avoided the incident.
As my car was unoccupied and properly
parked your daughter was solely at fault.
Fortunately the damage was slight. It cost
only $5.50 to bump out the dents and to
refinish the fender, a sum too small to
bother about forcing you to pay. I made no
claim for inconvenience and loss of use of
the car for the full day it was in the repair
shop.
Your failure to promptly make good my
out of pocket expense and your evident in-
tention to ignore the responsibility is more
than annoying. Because your attitude is so
typical 1 am constrained to seek satisfaction
in telling you that this trivial incident i. an
example of what is expected of a whole
people. It is such characteristics that are prin-
cipally to be blamed for the contempt and
ill will that is so universally expressed toward
so many millions throughout the world.
These words may not impress you any
more than was a certain Cohen who said:
"For five dollars and fifty cents, you can
call me anything you want." To make certain
that you shall know how I feel about your
"hit and run attitude" I am sending this by
registered letter.
When you are dismayed and frightened at
the hatred and terrible persecutions suffered
by so many millions, ponder how they are
the fruit of the same obnoxious seed as you
have sown.
This is not the end of the story. This registered
letter and the insurance company's letter carrying
the check for $5.50 crossed each other in the
mail.
We wonder whether this made a difference!
The gentleman who lost his temper is not a
stranger to many Jews. He had done business
with Jews during a very creditable professional
career. He employed Jewish associates. He com-
manded the respect of a large number of people
before he retired from active work in his field,
and these people will tell you that there was never
a display of prejudice or discrimination in his

In this little story is contained the best ex-
planation for the strength of character of the
English people. In addition to their courage, they
have not lost their sense of humor. That which
applies to the grownups is also applicable to the
youngsters, as evidenced by this story. The say-
ing grace of humor will prove one of the strong-
est weapons for the democracies against Hitlerisrn.

This Small World of Ours
Chronicler, columnist for London Jewish Chron-
icle, recently included the following paragraph
in his column: "In our obituary columns last
week the news was recorded of the death in Hull
at the age of 101 of Mrs. Eva Maizels. The news
reminds a correspondent of an episode Mrs.
Maizels used to relate which makes her in a sense
a link with Napoleon. When the French Emperor
was retreating with his army from Moscow, he
called at a house in Poland and demanded food.
A young girl there cooked some potatoes—all
that was at hand just then—but Napoleon was
in such haste to be gone that he would not stay
to eat them, but took them with him. That young
girl was Mrs. Maizel's mother."
That's how time and space are linked in this
small world of ours. In generations to come, our
contemporaries may be telling stories of a similar
nature—of Benito and Adolf being in too great a
hurry to stop to consume food taken from Jewish
communities; of Comrade Stalin making haste
to join them; of idols shattered and ideals re-
stored. This small world of ours moves faster
than we imagine.

"Of the People, by the People . •
599 Years Old
" -
Abraham Lincoln is believed to have been the
author of the phrase "Of the people, by the
people, for the people . . . " as it was used
in his famous Gettysburg Address. But Fred
Allen, the radio star, learned differently. Actually,
it is 559 years old. While doing some research
work, Allen came across the following: "In John
Wycliffe's introduction to his translation of the
Bible, published in England in 1382, these words
occur: 'The Bible is for the government of the
people, by the people and for the people.'" Which
goes to prove that there is nothing new under
the sun.
