May we express to Detroit
Jewry our sincere congratulations
on your campaign for the erec-
tion of a new center of higher
Jewish learning in your city.
These plans for the building of
a new home for your Yeshivah
are indeed a great step forward
in Detroit Jewish communal life.
Particularly important is it at
this time when European centers,
centuries old, are crumbling under
the crushing fists of mad op-
pressors, to erect in this land new
edifices to the glory of God and
new citadels for the perpetuation
of Torah. The history of acade-
mies of Talmudic study continues
in an unbroken line from Sura
to Volozin. The attempts of per-
secutors from Babylon to Berlin
to break that line have, at the
very best, been futile. For every
stronghold of the law that falls
at the hands of Europe's blood-
thirsty barbarians, a 'new, more
beautiful citadel must and will be
created in this land of the free.
Yeshivath Beth Yehudah has
already done remarkable and most
commendable work. Our present
enrollment from your city includes
17 students, many of whom have
proven outstanding in their re-
spective classes. That work must
be continued and increased—your
work must proceed rapidly to a
successful conclusion so that the
stream of students may continue
to flow stronger toward more and
more Torah learning.

Constructive Sign in

happy to congratulate the admin-

the institution, as indicated by
the urgent need of a larger and
more adequate buildintr. It is a
great occasion, to be celebrated
with pride and joy by the entire

need for laying the foundation of
normal Jewish living in the fu-
ture.
American Jewry has grown in
numbers and influence, but has
not as yet struck deep roots in
Jewish consciousness. To accom-
plish this end, our children must
be given intensive training in
Chumosh, Rashi, Gemorah and
Shulchan Oruch. They need the
healthy environment of Jewish
learning and practice.
Yeshivath Beth Yehudah is now
reorganized for the performance
of this task. I am certain the com-
munity will give it the physical
and material wherewithal for the
unfolding of its program. In set-
ting up a higher goal for Jewish
education, the Hebrew Talmudical
Academy will serve not only De-
troit Jewry, but the neighboring
smaller Jewish communities as
well.
