DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE and the Legal Chronicle

Rally Force for
Van Auken, Liberal
Palestine Drive Candidate for the
Board of Education
WASHINGTON, D. C.—That a

successful fund raising effort for
Palestine depends in a large
me a s u r e organized Zionist
strength and upon the extent
Zionist manpower is mobilized, is
stressed in a call issued to all
Z. 0. A. districts and units
throughout the country by Ed-
mund I. Kaufmann, president of
the Zion is t Organization of
America, on the occasion of the
launching of the independent
campaign by the United Palestine
Appeal.
Pointing out that experience
has shown that in all communi-
ties where a numerically strong
Zionist district has been func-
tioning, a larger response for
Palestine funds has been elicited,
Mr. Kaufmann urges district
leaders to accelerate their district
enrollments in preparation for the
campaign.

Howell Van Auken, prominent
Detroit attorney, well known lib-
eral, is a candidate for the Board
of Education at the primaries on
Monday and is endorsed by lib-
eral and labor groups. Some of

HOWELL VAN AUKEN

the most prominent Jewish citi-
zens of Detroit, among them the
most liberal teachers in our
school system, are urging his
election.
Mr. Van Auken has been prac-
ticing law in Detroit since 1913.
He has had to support himself
financially since he was 12
years old, earning his way
through high school and Amherst
College by waiting tables, wash-
ing dishes, tending furnaces and
many other odd jobs. At Amherst
College he won several swimming
medals and graduated with hon-
ors. He then worked his way
through the Law School of the
University of Michigan and
graduated with his degree of
Doctor of Jurisprudence.
A member of the Sons of the
American Revolution, Mr. Van
Auken's family settled in Michi-
gan when the Indians still were
in possession. He believes that
whether your ancestors landed on

Plymouth Rock or Ellis Island
that all came over to this coun-
try to be able to live as free men
governing themselves. He has
been a consistent liberal, and
during his career has served the
public in various offices, con-
scientiously and well. His rec-
ord in public office shows that
he has consistently worked for
the good of the people as a
whole. Howell Van Auken served
from 1934 to 1937 on the State
Accountancy Commission. In 1937
the Supreme Court Justice Frank
Murphy appointed him to the
Utilities Commission where he re-
duced the telephone rates over a
million and a half dollars. His
brief, accomplishing this, was
used by the State of Pennsyl-
vania after they had lost their
case in the lower courts, and his
brief won their case in the Su-
preme Court of that State.
Howell Van Auken's program
contains the following objectives:
Procurement of fair propor-
tion of State aid to augment lo-
cal funds for maintenance of
educational standards; smaller
classes to permit more attention
to the individual child; equal op-
portunity for all school children;
state financial sup p o r t for
Wayne University comparable to
that appropriated for other col-
leges and universities; enlarged
utilization of Federal Surplus
Commodities program to expand
free lunch service for school chil-
dren.
Howell Van Auken has been
endorsed by the central body of
.the A. F. of L., the Teachers'
Federation and Labor's Non-Par-
tisan League.

Arthur W. Sempliner, a can-

to fill the vacancy of Wayne
County Circuit Court Commis-
sioner, is one of the younger at-
torneys of the county who has
taken an ac-

University of
Michigan Law
School with a
very credita-
ble record,

been a success-
ful practicing
attorney in
Detroit for the
pas t several
years.
A. W. Sempliner
As a candi-
date for State
Senator from the First District
last fall, Sempliner was one of
the first men to advocate a
speeding up of the workman's
unemployment compensation ben-
efits, claiming that these bene-
fits should be paid at the end of
the third week instead of the
present five-week period.
He also campaigned vigorously
to take the sales tax off food and
beverages, pointing out that un-

Eimmtit mum

der the present system the small
storekeeper actually pays more
than half of the sales tax out of
his own pocket because he is un-
able to collect the tax on small
items.
Sempliner is endorsed by civic
and bar groups and a large num-
ber of the more prominent attor-
neys in the State, including for-
mer Governor Alexander J.

14-Year-Old Jew
Youngest Soldier
In British Army

LONDON. — (WNS) — The
distinction of being the young-
est soldier in the British Army
fell to a tall, broad-shouldered
14-year-old Jew, Geoffrey Blum-
berg, who told army officials
when he enlisted several months
ago , that he was 18 years old.
The Jewish youth, idolized
by the British press for his
bravery, said that he was an-
xious to emulate his father, a
veteran of the first World War
with a brilliant war record.
Young Blumberg's family re-
sides in Leeds, one of the
towns frequently visited by
Nazi bombers.
Army officials regretfully gave
Blumberg an honorable dis-
charge when they discovered
he was only 14 years of age.
He acquitted himself in the
best tradition of a British sol-
dier for the past few months.
