SHORT STORY

, EDITOR AND SCIENTIST CONFER-

BY GADABOUT

In one of the islands of the
West Indies, where Nazi propa-
ganda is rife, a democratic-
minded editor of one of the local
papers openly expressed his
views on the Germans in the cur-
rent war. The German minister,
who strangely enough is held in
high esteem by local government
officials, stormed into the wide
open office of the editor and bel-
lowed, This type of writing
doesn't suit me. Remember, your
father is still in Paris." Where-
upon, the editor, equally furious,
took his gun out of his desk
drawer, pointed it at the min-
ister and retorted, "Remember,
this is my gun and it will go off
in your direction if anything hap-
pens to my father because you
don't approve of my articles." To
date nothing has happened to the
editor's father, who is awaiting
passage on the next boat home.
It was the government of this
same island, which upon learning
that its till was empty, hastily
passed a law taxing tourists $10J
if they remained over 30 days.
