Lloyd

LONDON. (Palcor Agency)—
Walter Edward Guiness, F i r s t
Baron of Moyne since 1925, has
been named British Secretary of
State for the Colonies to succeed
Lord Lloyd, who died last week
after a brief illness. The new 60-
year-old Colonial Secretary has
had a varied career, serving as
Undersecretary of State for War
in 1922, Financial Secretary to
the Treasury in 1924, and Mini-
ster of Agriculture from 1925 to
1929.
Lord Moyne demonstrated his
sympathy for Jewish suffering
under Nazi persecution when he
contributed 1,000 pounds to the
Polish Jewish Relief Fund. He
said at the time that he hoped
his money could be used to bring
Polish Jewish leaders to Pale-
etine, which he was quoted as
saying is the best haven for
Jewish refugees.

In the past two months, it was
reported, 42 Jewish aged pa-
tients in the Rothschild Hospital
in Vienna died of other than
natural causes. During that same
period 75 Jewish inmates of the
state-sponsored home for the aged
and 60 Jews in the Jewish insane
asylum died.

A secret investigation con-

closed that all the deaths fol-
