submitted 200 new memebers.
During the week, the drive con-
tinued to gain momentum.
In addition to Dr. Goldstein,
the membership dinner was ad-
dressed by Rabbi Morris Adler,
president of the local organiza-
tion, Mr. Ellmann and Abraham
Cooper, vice-president of the or-
ganization, who presided.
Mr. Ellmann announced at the
meeting of the board of directors
on Tuesday that individual mem-
bers are arranging meetings of
non-members and that competent
speakers will address these groups
in an effort to enlist large num-
bers of Detroiters in the pressing
need of a strong voice from
American Jewry in behalf of
Palestine's needs.

Statement by Ellmann

In a follow-up statement on the

progress of the local drive, Mr.
EEllmannsaid this week:
"How does the community re-
spond to our appeal? From un-
expected sources and every walk
of life men are coming forth to
join our movement, and, more
than that, are lending their aid
in the enlistment of new recruits.
"Why not? Out of the total col-
lapse of so many powerful ideol-
ogical promises and the attendant
disillusionment of many honest
thinkers, one major movement
has stood much better the test
of time and fortune. Its pro-
tagonists do not suffer from the
same intellectual homelessness of
the erstwhile idealists who had
high hopes to reform the whole
world. Instead, the prophet of
this humble movement, Theodore
Herzl, four decades ago, saw the
terrific urgency of a secure Na-
tional homeland; saw the need
for a solution through a place
of refuge; insisted on Palestine
