CYRUS ADLER—WHO FATHERED
JEWISH BIOGRAPHY IN AMERICA

By ABRAHAM CAPLAN

"Cyrus Adler — biographer."
Among the many descriptive
terms which may be applied to
this extraordinary man is the
one suggested in the opening
sentence. For Dr. Adler was in
a real sense the father of Amer-
ican Jewish biography. He it
was who conceived the idea of
an American Jewish Year Book,
a source book of biography as
well as an annual compilation of
varied Jewish statistical mate-
rial. He it was who organized
the American Jewish Historical
Society which concerns itself with
unearthing and preserving his-
torical facts bearing upon the
work and achievements of the
Jew in the American scene.
And now Cyrus Adler, who for
a number of years edited the
Year Book and penned some of
the biographies appearing in it,
is the subject of the leading arti-
cle in the 1940-1941 issue.
To the present writer it seemed

We extend sincere good wishes for a
Chanukah filled with happiness and
blessed with full measure of prosperity
and may these wishes continue to find
fulfillment into the many years beyond.

inevitable that the author of this
biography should be Dr. Abra-
ham A. Neumann, Dr. Adler's
disciple, the rabbi of the con-
gregation of which Dr. Adler
was a life-long member and at
one time its president, the Mik-
veh Israel of Philadelphia, which
recently celebrated the two hun-
dredth anniversary of its found-
ing.
It is not the purpose of this
article to review Dr. Neumann's
short but eloquently written re-
cital of the life of the man whom
he undoubtedly revered as his
master. Until the time when a
full length biography shall have
been done, Dr. Neumann has per-
formed a signal service to the
cause of American Jewish history
by writing this well-balanced
story of the man whom the pres-
ent writer regards as perhaps
the most gifted, the most con•
structive figure American Jewry
nas produced.
Cyrus Adler, born in Arkansas
in 1863 and reared by his wid-
owed mother in Philadelphia in
a circle peopled by such men as
Sabato Morais, Mayer Sulzberg-
er and Solomon Solis-Cohen, he
became in turn the first Amer-
ican to obtain his doctorate in
Semitics in an American univers-
ity (John Hopkins), curator in
the Smithsonian Institution in
Washington, a diplomatic repre-
sentative of the United States
Government, one of the men who
re-organized the Jewish Theolog-
ical Seminary, a founder of the
American Jewish Committee and
later its executive chairman, the
first president of the Seminary,
succeeding the great Solomon
Schechter.
In this man there converged
nearly all the forces and activi-
ties which in their organic total-
ity constitute the flowering of
Jewish life—religion, education,
the spread of a knowledge of
Jewish literature through the
medium of the Jewish Publica-
tion Society, the translation of
the Bible and the publishing of
the Jewish Encyclopedia, the mag-
nificent work of the Joint Dis-
tribution Committee in succoring
stricken European Jewry since
1914. All these activities bore
the impress of the indefatigable
Adler. For in his heart there
burned a fire of love for his
people and its immortal tradition.
'Truly, the overshadowing pas-
sions of this giant among men
were God, Israel and the Torah.
We of Detroit have a special
interest in the life story of Dr.
Adler. In 1927, he addressed a
banquet which honored Rabbi A.
M. Hershman, who had then con-
cluded twenty years of service
as spiritual leader of Congrega-
tion Shaarey Zedek. That visit
was the first Dr. Adler had made
to Detroit and the address was
the only one he had ever deliv-
ered before a congregational aud-
ience. His presence at that func-
tion, one of the most brilliant
in the annals of Shaarey Zedek,
may be regarded as one of the
most precious events in the con-
gregation's history.
Dr. Neumann's excellent biog-
raphy is, for the nonce, a fitting
memorial to the man he loved
and revered. It is to be hoped
that full-length biog•phy of Dr.
Adler will be published without
loss of time, since the man who,
in this writer's opinion, is best
equipped for the task is avail-
able in the person of Dr. Neu-
mann. And a book on-the life of
Cyrus Adler, making full use of
his correspondence with the men
who figured in his long career
and utilizing the notes, diaries
and observations which he is
known to have written during the
years of his busy, fruitful life,
would constitute a mine of in-
formation, a running commentary
on American Jewish history for
a full half century, a book of
surpassive interest and color.
