MRS. HAROLD GARBER
(Miss Ruth Willis)

Sunday evening, Nov. 17, the
marriage of Ruth Willis, daugh-
te• of Mr. and Mrs. I. Willis, to
Harold Garber, son of Mr. and
Mrs. S. Garber, took place at
Congregation Shaarey Zedek, Dr.
A. M. Hershman performing the
ceremony.
The bride was gowned in antique
ivory slipper satin made on prin-
cess lines. Italian outwork and
baby seed pearls at the sweet-
heart neckline, distinguished the
bride's gown from those of her
attendants. A six-yard veil of
ivory illusion fell from a sweet-
heart cape outlined in the pearls.
The bridesmaids were the
Misses Harriette Silverman, Ruth
Plotnick, Selma Schwartz and
Florence Alderman. Miss Lenore
Willis, sister of the bride, was
maid of honor.
Miss Anita Garber, the flower
girl, preceded Miss Willis down
to the altar.
David Mintz, William Zimmer-
man, Dr. S. • S. Willis, Harold
Waldman, Harold Plotnick and
Seymour Vander acted as ushers.
David Garber was best man.
After the reception the couple
left for a motor trip through
the eastern states.

The fate of Jewish education
in America depends largely upon
the voluntary services offered by
members of the Jewish commu-
nity who realize that any insti-
tution of Jewish learning is the
very foundation for the future
Jewish community. Such are the
men and women who today serve
the interests of one of our city
most important institutions, the
United Hebrew Schools of De-
troit.
Every movement or organiza-
tion endeavors to build a reserve
line which will in time fill the
regretted vacancies in its ranks.
It was with this purpose in mind
that the Board of Directors of
the United Hebrew Schools laid
the foundation for the Alumni
of our schools many years ago.
Since the ages and interests
of the Alumni members vary
greatly, and realizing also that
many of the Alumni will un-
doubtedly serve their schools in
the future, which will necessi-
tate a broad understanding of the
problems confronting the Jewish
community in America, therefort
the organization's cultural work
covers all phases, movements and
problems of Jewish life today.
In the past two months, for in-
stance, the organization dis-
cussed the following: "Palestine
and the Present War"; "The
American Jewish Youth and Its
Problems", and "Associations
of American Jews".
The organization is also plan-
ning two important projects
which will serve the Jewish com-
munity as a whole, one—in con-
nection with Palestine, and the
other—Jewish holidays.
The Alumni organization also
promotes various social activities
for its members. They also pub-
lish a bi-weekly mimeographed
paper, "Hakol" ("The Voice").
This year, a new group was
added to the organization, the
Class of 1940.

That charity is bad which
from independence its
proper pride, and from mendicity
its proper shame.—Southey.
