of the Jewish people in the Dias-
pora. He quoted for her verses
from the Torah and told her of the
sages and martyrs. He ended by
saying to her in a very dramatic
manner: "Look what you have
done. You have betrayed your
people, you have taken their Tor-
ah and traditions and everything
which is dear to them and tram-
pled upon it." To which she ans-
wered: "I, I am betrayer? What
have I known of your Torah?
What have I known of your beau-
tiful holidays as you describe
them? All I knew was to prepare
the food for the holiday. While
you men went to the synagogue to
pray, to study, I cleaned the
house, prepared the food. You are
talking to me about Shovuoth, the
day of giving the Torah. I will
tell you what Shovuoth means to
me. To me it means only prepar-
ing a certain kind of Shovuoth
food, spreading the floor with
leaves and setting the table so
that you men may come and en-
joy the holiday. I haven't betrayed
anybody, I haven't changed any-
thing. I had nothing to change."
The Woman's Modern Right
What shall we say now when
the girl is given the same edu-
cational opportunities as the boy,
attends the public schools, the col-
leges, pursues all sorts of studies,
participates in all manner of cul-
tural living, is connected with
every conceivable cultural endea-
vor, is at home in all educational
spheres, except in the sphere of
Jewish education.
And this is the future mother of
Israel, the mother who is expected
to make Jewish life beautiful,
interesting and inspiring; the
mother who will prepare the
house for the Sabbath in the true
traditional manner; who will
make the holidays felt in her
home; and who will raise and
guide her children in the spirit of
Jewish tradition. In short, the
mother who will be a true Jew-
ish mother of Israel.
These are the ideals set for
the Jewish girls whom we don't
even give a chance to acquaint
herself with the basic elements of
Jewish learning. This is the wo-
man we expect to build the future
Jewish home.
This problem should be
of great concern to everybody, to
the leading educators, to the
teachers, the text-bock writers,
and the lay leaders. This problem
