A child that does not get a
proper Jewish education, a child
that is not connected with the
past of his people, that does not
know of the efforts made by his
people in preserving Jewish ideas
and ideals, a child that has no
conception of our aspirations for
the future, such a child invari-
ably develops an inferiority com-
plex, and when he is encountered
by difficulties he faces them with
a feeling of shame, and at times

We, the Jews of Detroit, are
fortunate in that we have suc-

EDUCATION: A Never Ceasing Process

By DR. A. M. HERSHMAN

Jewish education, if it is to
come into its own, calls for work
of a two-fold character: exten-
sive and intensive.
It demands, in the first place,
extensive work. We must exert
our utmost endeavors to reach a
far larger number of children
than are now enrolled in our
schools. This is the primary pur-
pose of Education Month. It seeks
to bring home to parents the
duty they owe to their children.
But extensive work, however
important, does not exhaust the
scope of the duty of those who are
vitally interested in Jewish educa-
tion. We need above all intensive
work. "Our children are our hos-
tages," say the rabbis. They will
determine our future. A smatter-
ing of Hebrew or a superficial
knowledge of Judaism will not
lead to that appreciation of Jew-
ish content and value without
which Judaism is meaningless and
the continuance of Israel impos-

sible. The standard of Jewish
education must be raised to the
end that the training which our
children receive will deepen their
Jewish consciousness and equip
them for Jewish life.
Let is be borne in mind, how-
ever, that if Jewish education is
to be effective, we must not think
of it merely in terms of the child.
Education is a never-ceasing pro-
cess. Hence the important place
which adult education holds in
the divine economy of Judaism.
The passion for learning, to which
his elders gave ample evidence,
served as an incentive stimulus
to the child to pursue his studies
with zeal and enthusiasm. The
attitude of the adult towards
study of Judaism will in no
mean measure influence the atti-
tude of the child.
The annual Education Month
inaugurated by the United Hebrew
Schools is fraught with beneficent
possibilities.
