Two rabbis, Rabbi Chanina and conference of the United Pales-
Rabbi Chiya, were divided in their tine Appeal, to be held in Chicago,
opinion as to the manner in which
they would restore the knowledge
of the Torah should it be forgot-
ten. Rabbi Chiya claimed that he
could restore the knowledge of the
Torah through profundity and eru-
dition, while Rabbi Chiya held
that in order to restore the knowl-
edge of the Torah, you must start
from the very beginning. You
must create learning possibilities;
you must make learning accessible.
Rabbi Chiya says, here is what
I would do if I were faced with
the problem of restoring the
knowledge of the Torah: I would
go to the very genesis of the pro-
ject. I would even go as far as
to sow seeds, raise flax, weave
nets, catch deer, out of their hide
I would prepare parchment on
which I would write the five
Chumoshim, and this is how I
would lay the foundation to the
restoration of the Torah.
Rabbi Yehuda Hanasi was so
impressed with Chiya's program
that he exclaimed, "The deeds of

Idol of millions for more than
a decade, Mr. Tunney has de-
voted a large part of the past
few years to helping American
youth in its problems, and to or-
ganizing boys' clubs throughout
the country. He has figured in
the national headlines during re-

of the American Youth Congress
for its subversive "ism" doctrines,
and his establishment and leader-

BULGARIA

(Continued from Page One)
rally sufficient voters neces,tiry
for the bill's adoption.
The Jewish population of hal-
garia is for the most part v.'ity
poor, playing a very unimportant
role in the country's political and
economic life. There are no ,lows
in government posts or in huh
army posts. Peddlers and small
traders, they eke out a meagre
livelihood. In the past, Bulgaria
has been relatively untouched by
anti-Semitism.

Hungarian Jews Apprehensi v e as
Hungary Joins Axis
BUDAPEST (WNS) — Hun-
garian Jews feared new anti-
Jewish demonstrations following
Hungary's formal signing of the
Axis pact. Their fears were allay-
ed somewhat by Premier Paul
Teleki's speech to Parliament in
which he implied that the gover n-
ment planned no drastic anti-
Jewish laws in the immediate fu-
ture.
Jewish circules here were dis-
turbed by the fact that increased
anti-Jewish sentiment followed in
the wake of Slovakia's signing of
the Hitler-inspired pact.
Hitherto, the Military Service
Act prohibited employers from
discharging employees, Jews as
well as Gentiles, summoned for
temporary military service. It is
estimated that between 50,000 and
100,000 Jews are now in labor
camps.

Nazis Sentence 2 Jewish Butch-
ers to 2 Years for Kosher
Slaughter
LONDON (WNS) — Two Jew-
ish butchers in Radom, Poland,
were sentenced to two years in
the penitentiary by a special Nazi
court for slaughtering three
calves according to Jewish ritual,
the Warschauer Zeitung reported.
Kosher slaughter was forbidden
by Nazi authorities in the Gouv-
ernment General.

Rumanian Jews Forced Into
Labor Gangs to Repair
Earthquake Damage
BUCHAREST (WNS)—Adopt-
ing Nazi methods, the Rumanian
government has pressed into spe-
cial labor gangs all unemployed
Jews between the ages of 15 and
50 to repair the widespread dam-
age caused by the recent violent
earthquakes.
In Nazi-occupied Poland Jews
were compelled to repair the dam-
age caused by Nazi air-raids and
shelling. In Germany Jews were
forced to remove the debris re-
sulting from British air raids.
In return for their work, Jews
in the special Rumanian labor
gangs will receive food and lodg-
ing. Rumanian Jewish victims of
the quake received no relief money
from the government, which spent
large sums in alleviating the dis-
tress of non-Jewish victims.

that Greece was fighting to defend
