JERUSALEM.—(WNS)— Pal-
estine's 500,000 Jews united in
a strong protest against the de-
cision of the British Government
to deport 1,771 Jewish refugees
who arrived at Haifa port with-
out legal status to some unnamed
British colony.
Pushing the dispute over Pin-
chas Rutenberg's proposals for
national unity into the back-
ground, the Palestine Jewish
community immediately ordered
a general stoppage of work and
business. Work in all factories
was suspended as a protest
against the deportation order.
The refugees, including 600
women and 171 children, who
were refused permission to land,
started a hunger-strike as a pro-
test. The refugees arrived aboard
the steamships Pacific and Milos
early in November, it was
learned.

(A Palcor Agency dispatch
said: "It was rumored that the
British colony to which it is now
proposed to deport the 1,771 il-
legal refugees caught off the
Palestine shore is the island of
Mauritius, about 500 miles cast
of Madagascar, which has fre-
quently been referred to as the
colony to which Hitler would
consign Europe's Jews. Mauritius
is 720 square miles in area and
has a population of approxi-
mately 400,000.)
It is learned that 2,000 more
European Jewish refugees ar-
rived at Lanarca in the British
island colony of Cyrus, presum-
ably en route to Palestine. Jew-
ish leaders expected the arrival
of the now batch of refugees to
aggravate the issue.

Appropriate Program
to Be Presented by
Hebrew Schools

Fourteenth annual Education
Month of the United Hebrew
Schools will officially conclude with
a cultural and social evening on
Sunday evening, Dec. 15, at the
Rose Sittig Cohen Building, Law-
ton near Davison. This event will
substitute for the annual Educa-
tion Month dinners held in past
years.
Bernard Isaacs, superintendent
of the United Hebrew Schools,
stated that an appropriate pro-
gram is planned for that evening.
A musical program will feature
the event which will be followed
by a social hour during which re-
freshments will be served.
Education Month Efforts
The 14th annual Education
Month observance, of which Rabbi
Morris Adler is chairman, was
launched this year on Rosh Ha-
shonah with a manifesto calling
upon Detroit Jews to join in the
endeavor to arouse the parents to
the task of educating their chil-
dren.
The main features of the Edu-
cation Month were as follows:
Newspaper publicity directed by
Philip Slomovitz, editor of The
Detroit Jewish Chronicle, Joseph
Haggai, editor of the local Day,
and Jack Kellman, an alumnus
and a member of the board of
the Hebrew Schools.
