Fusing Ethical and Moral Elements of
Judaism with Lessons of Democracy

Sobeloff Evaluates Significance of Education Month of
United Hebrew Schools

By ISIDORE SOBELOFF
Executive Director, Jewish Welfare Federation

One third of the Jews of the
world today are under Soviet
rule; one-third under Nazi domi-
nation, and the remaining third
are in America, in Palestine and
scattered in smaller numbers
throughout the world.
Aside from the uniquely favor-
able place of Palestine in the life
of the Jews, America has become,
by elimination of other possibili-
ties, the one great hope in the
world for the future of Judaism.
But entirely apart from the im-
portance of American Jewry in
relation to the rest of the world,
America certainly is the center
of life for American Jews and
their children. Self-interest re-
quires that the growing genera-

WOMEN'S AUXILIARY OF JEW-
ISH, HOME FOR AGED

The executive board of the
Women's Auxiliary of the Jew-
ish Home for Aged met at the
home of Mrs. David Kliger, on
Wednesday, Nov. 13, for break-
fast. Issues of importance were
discussed and it was also de-
cided to hold monthly meetings
for the entire organization.
The Auxiliary thanks Abraham
Littman of the Yiddish Theater
who made possible the entertain-
ment for the old folks at his
theater. Mrs. Joseph Rose, chair-
man of the sunshine committee,
arranged the theater party and
was assisted by Mrs. Philip Gore-
lick. Buses were provided by
the auxiliary, and refreshments
by Mrs. Rose and Mrs. Gorelick.

donation by Mr. and Mrs. Joseph

elements which comprise Judaism
and fuse this learning with the
lessons of democracy which con-
stitute. American citizenship.
Through this teaching of ideas
and concepts, we must increase
our children's sense of social re-
sponsibility and give every child
a libable and satisfying outlook
on life.
Over the years the United He-
brew Schools has made great
strides. Throughout the year it
had educated the children—and
during Education Month and on
other occasions it has educated
the parents to the education
needs of the children.
The professional and law lead-
ership of the Schools are alert to
the increasing importance of their
task, which Detroit recognizes as
a community task. Conceptions of
education, methods, programs, cur-
ricula, all are subject to experi-
mentation and change. Standards
are being raised; opportunities
must be widened. With the con-
tinued help of an interested com-
munity, this great communal re-
sponsibility will be met in ever-
increasing measure.
