Discovery of "A Movement"
"Town Crier" Jack Pickering, writing
in Monday's Detroit Free Press, makes a
revelation: a "New Movement" has been
discovered — a movement "against the
Jews."
There were a few Jews who became
disturbed. Here is a new demonstration
of anti-Semitism, said they.
In reality, there is nothing to be dis-
turbed about, since this "New Movement"
is a very old movement.
Have you heard of the Crusaders of
the Middle Ages? Well, there have been
repetitions of "crusades" throughout the
centuries. There were the Inquisition, the
Chmielnicki massacres, the pogroms of
Pobedonostzev, the Tzarist and Rumanian
outrages, the Communist and Nazi-Fascist
movements, the modern attacks upon our
people, the threats from the Coughlinites
and their various auxiliary movements.
Now, Mr. Pickering makes a discovery.
We must admit that a few people actually
were frightened by his piece in which he
said:
An outstate politician, a man of consider-
able weight in one of Michigan's bigger cities,
told the Crier and a number of others of
this occurrence.
In his home city, the proprietor of a res-
taurant whispered to him, "Have you heard
about the New Movement ?" and then tried
to enlist the politician in the "Movement."
Some questions from the politician finally
brought out the information that the "New
Movement" was "against Jews."
The incident happened not more than a
few days ago; it was related in a Detroit
night club. The significant thing, to the Crier,
was the grim intensity of the attention paid
to the story.
It was not regarded as casual gossip. It
was discussed as a matter of grave import-
ance. It is. But as long as that grim response
remains, such movements will not go very
far.
One man asked, "Do you suppose there is
any of that going on here in Detroit?"
The Crier answers: Yes. To my definite
knowledge, there is, although I don't know
how much.

We would like to say to Mr. Pickering,
and to our fellow Jews who became
frightened by this piece, that they have
nothing new to fear. Whatever has ex-
isted of anti-Semitism may be either de-
clining or increasing; but it is not a new
phenomenon. -
Take the Coughlin movement. We be-
lieve it is declining. Some people believe
that there is still great danger from the
numerous anti-Semitic organizations in
this country. We do not doubt the wisdom
of this admonition. But why not look at
it from another point of view : the coun-
try was flooded with anti-Semitic propa-
ganda during the last election ; the Roose-
vent administration was branded the "Jew
Deal"; violent anti-Semites made common
cause in an effort to defeat the President.
If all the "New Movements" were to be
as dangerous as some believe them to be,
then the election of Nov. 5 should have
been a rout of Democratic candidates and
of the national administration. But—you
can not fool all of the people all of the
time. The masses of American voters dis-
carded the antiaemitic appeals, and the
vicious propaganda fell on deaf ears. The
average voter considered national prin-
ciples and national needs and refused to
become conftised with the injection of
religious and racial bias in the campaign.
Here you have the attitude of the
How to Find It"—warns Jewish job-seek-
ers who "think they can get a job by lying
about their race and religion" that they
are only fooling themselves because "most
people don't get away with it." Among
the other important bits of advice of-
fered by the Bnai Brith Vocational Serv-
ice Bureau and the Chicago Jewish Voca-
tional Service, joint publishers of this
pamphlet, is for Jewish job-seekers not
to become emotional about discrimination
so as not to "give an employer an excuse
for keeping a prejudice which he may
have groundlessly built up."
In the main the advice offered in this
pamphlet is of great value. There is room
for a great deal of self-criticism in Jewish
ranks, for self-guidance so that we should
present a good front and be able to make
friends in our contacts with our neighbors.
But what about the frantic young man
or young woman who wants a job, who
is told time and again at employment of-
fices that Jews are not wanted? What
are they to do? Often, in their despair,
these young people either fail to admit
their Jewishness or let themselves be
listed as Christians. Thus, they become
"Marranos" in their dealings with non-
Jews. Their case is pathetic, and it is not
solved by advice to stop lying.
The cause of this trouble is not the
lying Jewish job-seeker but the discrimi-
nating employer or employment agency.
To break down this prejudice appears to
be an endless job.
