The Only Dictator: THE PEOPLE
Nov. 5 is over—and we had another election.
Therein lies an important story which serves to
make the Election Day of 1940 historic.
About three years ago, after the ignominious
defeat of the Republicans in the 1936 election, a
whispering campaign commenced. "There will be
no election in 1940," politicians began to say.
Among them were some of the more prominent
leaders in American politics. The implication was
that Franklin Delano Roosevelt sought to estab-
lish a dictatorship in this country.
Now—you know the result.
There WAS an election.
There will be other elections in the future.
Remember what the President said in one of
his addresses last week? There will be a President
after the next four years, and there will be many
more Presidents, and the term "President" will
be a symbol of honor.
But this charge of dictatorship was only one
of many rumors and intimidations which made
the campaign such an ugly one. The smear-cam-
paign against the President's family was the most
regrettable of all.
What about Hugh Johnson? Will he continue
to pollute his columns with smears against Jew
and others on religious and racial lines? What
about John L. Lewis? Will he resign, or will he
do a Coughlin somersault, first threatening to
resign and then nonchalantly changing his mind?
Will the CIO rank and file hold him to his word?
If he is held to his word, perhaps the ultimate
peace in the labor movement will result in one
of the greatest triumphs of this election.
Then there is George U. Harvey, president of
the Borough of Queens, in New York, who threat-
ened that if President Roosevelt is re-elected he
will move to Canada. Remember George U. Har-
vey — pro-Coughlinite, anti-Semite, Christian
Frontist? Well, there is a sufficient fund in New
York to help him go to Canada, provided he does
not get return fare. But Harvey has changed his
mind. He did it quickly—on Tuesday evening—
when he said he has decided differently, since
what is good for 130,000,000 people is good
enough for him.
That's the spirit! It was the first good result of
the election, when a man who had been erring
for years decided to bow to the will of the
people! That's the way it should be with all of
us. We should forget the differences of the
campaign, and we should all strive for National
Unity!
But in attaining National Unity let us not for-
get the lessons of the campaign. Remember—the
Bundists and Nazis and Fascists and Father
Coughlin were against President Roosevelt. This
group harmed Wendell L. Willkie more than
anything else. That's the way with the American
people—they just won't stand for bigotry and
intolerance.
By the same token, Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt
—First Lady of the Land Eleanor—emerges a
greater woman. She was abused, the enemies of
the Roosevelts resorted to the nastiest smear cam-
paign against her, but she will remain the best
loved woman in the land—with Dorothy Thomp-
son holding an important place next to her.
And don't forget the Hon. Henry A. Wallace,
our new Vice-President. We predict that Mr.
Wallace will help make history during the next
four years and that he will emerge as the greatest
Vice-President this country ever had. A man of
great culture, a man of faith, a student of the
Bible, one who is completely devoid of prejudice
and whose great desire is to help build a new
order—spiritual and economic—in which no man
shall be persecuted and in which all people shall
be given a chance to life, liberty and the pur-
suit of happiness, Henry A. Wallace will soon
assume the important position of one of the
master builders of the great world order that
will have to be fashioned after the pattern of
America. For, it is inevitable that President Roose-
velt and Vice-President Wallace should exert
strong influence over Europe in the new sweep
of liberalism that must put an end to dictatorship
and bring justice to humanity.
When our children grow up and tell their chil-
dren the story of the 1940 election, they will be
able to relate the huge joke of the charge that
Roosevelt aspired to war and to dictatorship and
that he proved to his people and to all the world
that he stood for peace and for liberty and for
justice.
This is a great (lay for America—and for all
the world.

Here is Revisionism in its true colors. Nothing
could be more self-condemnatory than this state-
ment by a "member of the world presidency of
the New Zionist Organization."
Compare this rambling attempt at defending
the Revisionist position with Mr. Louis Lipsky's
brilliant article on the need for the creation of
a Jewish army, which we published last week,
and you have the exact difference between an
attempt at accomplishing an important objective
and an effort at sensationalism and self-publica-
tion. Mr. Lipsky does not hesitate to criticisze
Great Britain; but he stays within his own ranks
to discuss the issue, to arrive at a decision on
a vital subject, to rationalize. Not so with the
Revisionists who apparently are concerned more
with attacking England than with helping the
Jewish position.
Elias Ginsburg's statement speaks for itself.
It is unnecessary to point out that he misrepre-
sents facts; that there already are 5,000 Jews
in the Palestinian fighting force, not the 400
he quotes; it is similarly unnecessary to argue
the point regarding the relative strength of Zion-
ist factions, since the 4,000 or more enrolled mem-
bers of Zionist parties in Detroit are an acknowl-
edged factor here, as opposed to the two or
three Detroit individuals who are known to be
affiliated with the Revisionists.
It is an idle boast to compare oneself with
Churchill in speaking of an appeasing Chamber-
lain. Churchill never advocated destructive effort;
what he criticized was appeasement. The Zionists
whom the Revisionists are criticizing did not
appease while carrying on reconstruction work;
they merely negotiated in an effort to secure
ever greater concessions from Britain; and while
they could and should have been firmer in their
demands, the record shows that they have been
unyielding and that they NEVER abandoned the
Zionist principles of building and negotiating and
demanding their rights.
The gem in Mr. Ginsburg's statement is the
reference to "National Funds"; "we receive no
share from them so we do not contribute to them,"
he tells us. Here you have Revisionist idealism.
Imagine what would have happened to Palestine
if there were 4,002 Detroit Jews feeling that
way during Allied Jewish Campaigns instead of
just two Revisionists? There would be no haven
in Palestine, either for Jewish builders of colon-
ies, or planters of trees, or mobilizers of fight-
ing defense forces. This Revisionist sentiment
tallies with a statement that appeared in the
September, 1940, Bulletin of the American Friends
of Jewish Palestine (another Revisionist cell),
in which an appeal was made for the Revisionists'
"defense fund" on the ground that "the time for
planting trees is past." (This is fifth colmning
