Detroit Jews gave Congressman
Dingell a great ovation at that
historic meeting. But it was not
the first or only time that the
Detroit Congressman spoke in de-

done that consistently. He is

spoke in protest against the re-

MRS. LENA ALTER

'A Good Judge'

On Aug. 9, 1940, the "Purely
Commentary" column in The De-
troit Jewish Chronicle carried the
following article:
"Among the candidates to be
remembered in the forthcoming
Primaries is our good friend Con-
gressman John D. Dingell.
"Rep. Dingell is a true liberal,
a friend of the underdog, an earn-
est Democrat. He calls a spade
a spade, goes to bat for friends,
makes no distinction between reli-
gious or racial groups and can
be depended upon to do the right
thing in Congress. We have no
doubt that the Democrats in his
District will know how to evalu-
ate his services by retaining him
as their candidate in the Novem-
ber elections, and that his district
will honor him sufficiently by re-
turning him to Congress by an
overwhelming majority.
"We deem it an obligation to
give Mr. Dingell credit for his
services at this time, when he
must remain in Washington in
view of the international crisis,
and thus to call the attention of
voters to the fact that he will
not be in position to campaign for
his own re-election. His constitu-
ents will have to do the cam-
paigning for him.
These are the sentiments that
are being echoed today in many
Jewish quarters in behalf of Con-
gressman Dingell's campaign for
re-election to Congress on the
Democratic ticket.
As a member of the Ways and
Means Committee, the most im-
portant and powerful committee
in Congress, Congressman Dingell
is in a position to not only safe-
guard the interests of his corstit-
uency, but likewise, the interests
of all of the taxpaying elements
in the State of Michigan. It is
worthy of note too that since the
election of Congressman Dingell
to the Ways and Means Commit-
tee in 1934 every Democratic Con-
gressman elected since that time
has been, through his efforts,
placed on an important and ex-
clusive committee of the House.

At an Anti-Jewish Meeting

Editor, Detroit Jewish Chronicle:
I spent two hours at an anti-
Jewish meeting last night in the
hopes that I would have a chance
to talk a few minutes for the
plan on the reverse side of this
sheet. At the very end of the
meeting, with perhaps 10 left in
the hall, I had about 5 minutes
to talk concerning this plan. I
believe I made some slight im-
pression, but it is hard to talk
constructively to a meeting which
has been destructive.
It seems to me that hate, envy,
jealousy, makes people powerless
for good. It seems to me that
the people who hate, who ar•
jealous, who envy, poison and
destroy themselves.
Is it not time that we paid
attention to those two great.
Jews, Moses and Christ? Moses
telling us to honor our fathers
and mothers, to be honest, det-
ent, truthful, and Christ telling
us to love each other, look after
widow and orphan, etc.?
