Ray D. Schneider, chairman of
the Wayne County Board of Audi-
tors, has throughout his political
career been a . progressive Demo-
crat. a follower of Roosevelt and
an ardent devotee of the New
Deal. Ile has also practiced a pol-
icy of fair and equal treatment
for all races and creeds.
Auditor Schneider has contrib-
utNI to Jewish charities and has
appointed a number of Jewish
men and women to county posi-
tions. Among Jewish county ap-
pointees are Drs. Ira Altshuler
and Robert Kaltman, county phy-
sicians connected with the Cor-
oner's office; Samuel Leve, head
of the important department of
investigation, which handles ap-
plicants for hospitalization and
county medical care and which
serves thousands of people every
year. Other county employes in-
clude Paul Masserman, Anne
Hertzberg, Betty Franklin, Ber-
tha Hertzberg and numerous oth-
ers
Expenditures for welfare activi-
ties, for hospitalization and medi-
cal care for the poor have been

greatly increased since Mr. Schnei-
der took office on Jan. 1, 1933. El.--
More than 55 per cent of the
county appropriation for the year
is used for welfare activities,
maintenance of county institutions
and medical care for the indigent.
At the same time, the county debt
has been reduced from more than
$15,000,000 to about $3,000,000.
