OCTOBER 25, 1940 TISHRI 23, 5701 The Community Fund Drive Once again we join in the plea for lib- eral support of the Detroit Community Fund, whose annual campaign will start On Oct. 28. In this land of plenty we can show our appreciation for our liberties and the de- mocracy which gives us our security by making it possible for the less privileged also to live like human beings. The last decade has seen drastic changes in our economy. The standard of living of millions of our people has been improved, they have been given a sense of confidence and have been assured a chance to share in the bounties of Amer- ica. Such assurances make our democracy stronger. They teach people the values of life and they prepare them to oppose the indecencies which have been brought down upon mankind by the totalitarian rulers who oppress and enslave the masses of the people. The new standards brought into being during the last decade must be strength- ened and must be given a chance to be- come rooted in our economy. One of the ways in which that can be done is by supporting those agencies which provide for the welfare needs of our neighbors and which make it possible for the young people to have educational and recrea- tional facilities. Give to the Community Fund! Help strengthen our democratic institutions! Raise the standards of the American peo- ple's existence as an answer to the in- decencies which rule important commu- nities in Europe. Do Jews Have All the Money ? The Education of Our Children In many quarters, there was evident a spirit of despair during the past year. It was a year drenched in tears and blood, a year that crushed the confidence of many people. The new attitude of "what's the use" is so foreign to the attitude of Jews, in the light of historic experience, that new obligations are placed upon the Jewish people. We must think in terms of our children, of their attitude on life, of their reactions upon the happenings which cause nation to war upon nation. In the light of the needs created by present conditions, observance of Educa- tion Month, annually instituted by the United Hebrew Schools of Detroit, be- comes a matter of much graver signifi- cance than in the past. Our children must be given courage, they must be steeped in faith, else they will not be able to bear the brunt of new responsibilities imposed upon them at this time. Jewish leadership is challenged by the present crisis, just as world leadership is challenged for solution of a problem which has been created by the hegemony of the jungle in a vast portion of the globe. Will our leaders, our educators, the parents in Israel, be able to meet the crisis as courageously as is expected of them by the traditional Jewish attitude of non-defeatism? If they do, then our children will be assured of the right kind of guidance. It is the kind of training which we owe to them, and we dare not fail in this responsibility. Education Month is merely the begin- ning of rededication to such a purpose. May it mark the inauguration of a period of faith and confidence merited by the grave period in our history. A Business Man's American Way The Donnelley Red Book, the classified telephone directory of New York City, has just issued its fall and winter volume. The front cover of the new directory con- tains a colored picture of the Statue of Liberty and the back cover is devoted to "a business man's version" of the Bill of Rights. Sidney Hollaender, president of the Ever-Ready Label Corp. of New York, paid $10,000 for the latter page on which to outline his ideas of the "American Way." He explains the reasons for his liking of our mode of living as follows: "I like the American Way, why? "Because: I can go to any church I please, "I can read, see and hear what I choose, "I can express opinions openly, "My mail reaches me as it was sent—un- censored, "My telephone is untapped, "I can join any political party I wish, "I can vote for what and whom I please, "I have a constitutional right to trial by jury, "I am protected against unconstitutional search and seizure, "Neither my life nor my property can be forfeited without due process of law." One of the most frequently heard fa- bles is that Jews possess all the money. But the truth was revealed by the Se- curities and Exchange Commission last week. This Federal agency shows that the wealthiest families in America are topped by the following: Ford, duPonts, Rocke- f eller, Mellon, McCormick, Hartford, Harkness, Duke. Pew, Pitcairn, Clark. Reynolds, Kress. Where are the Jews in this monetary picture? The answer is obvious. The story about Jews possessing much money is a myth. Now the question arises: how can you get the average non-Jew to see this truth? This is well said, and it is worth $10,000 of anny rich man's money to be able to explain the American Way of Life to the people at large. The average American lives this mode of life without talking about it. For the few who need explain- ing of this great libertarian system, Mr. Hollaender has rendered!, a good service. BIRON • WAR ECHOES Consolation : One thing the Germans didn't find in Holland when they marched in was the immense store of diamonds for which the Netherlands have long been famous . . . It wasn't en- gagement rings that the Nazis wanted these diamonds for . . . It seems the gems are an essen- tial material in the manufacture of airplane motors . . . Pierre Laval, the man whom the Petain- paid press agents herald as the savior of France, needs two Ge- stapo body-guards to protect him from the "love" of his own coun- trymen . . . Vichy-washy is what Broadway calls the French gov- ernment nowadays . . . All of which reminds us that one of the most objectionable books written on the fall of France is the one by Rene de Chambrun, entitled "I Saw France Fall" . . . In case you've forgotten, Rene is the son-in-law of Laval, and shares his father-in-law's preju- dices against democracy . .. The British War Office isn't very happy today about having reject- ed the Jewish offer of a Pales- tine army of 100,000 at the be- ginning of the war . . . If Brit- ain had a well-equipped army of 100,000 in the Near East today the prospects of the coming bat- tle for the Suez Canal would look better for her. • ITEMS OF NOTE It now seems that the real rea- son why Father Coughlin stopped his broadcasting was not that ha couldn't find any radio stations willing to take him on, but be- cause his ecclesiastic superiors told him to lay off .. . .. Nobody denies any longer that George Sylvester Viereck is a paid Nazi propagandist . . . Yet Boake Car- ter, of radio fame, goes out of his way to defend George, in the name of free speech . . . Note to Bund members: Der Adolf has issued a call for half a million loyal Nazis to come "home to the Reich" to help him win the war by joining his labor front .. Well, boys, what are you waiting for? • ABOUT PEOPLE Fannie Brice has entered on a new role, that of mother-in-law .. Her daughter recently married editor Ray Stark of Hollywood. Max Band, the Jewish painter from France, who's now in this country, is going to have an im- portant exhibition of his work on the Coast in December. Latest Broadway chatter is that Libby Holman, the blues singer, is going in for operatic training in a big way. You probably never heard of Hollywood's Dick Klino, but he's the real reason behind the glamor of many a streamlined movie star . . . Dick is the physical cul- ture expert who directs the ex- ercising of many of screenland's most prominent citizens. READY TO EXPLODE? • LISTEN HERE With the arrival of Franz W. fel and Heinrich Mann on e shores the most important of the intellectual anti-Nazi rebels have escaped the Gestapo in Frame . . . But they themselves don't know how close a shave they had —because within the next four weeks the Petain government will decide to transfer all the anti- Nazi refugees to the Nazi-occu- pied area of Europe , • , Wi wonder whether you noted Lion Feuchtwanger's tragic comment on his experiences in France .. . Said the diminutive German Jew- ish novelist: "The French put me in a concentration camp because I was German, while British planes were flying over Germany dropping propaganda leaflets quoting passages from my anti- Nazi book" . . . No wonder France collapsed ... Why doesn't one of the Jewish organizations take up Joe Brainin's suggestion for a Jewish Blood Legion? . . The idea being to organize thou sands of young Jews to donate their blood, through the Ameri- can Red Cross, for transfusions to those injured by Nazi raiders on the British Isles . . . In case you didn't know it, the Red Cross is looking for blood to be shipped to England for that purpose. • LITERARY NEWS The book reviewers seem afraid to tackle Maurice Samuel's "The Great Hatred", which came out just recently . . . It is because Samuel's interpretation of anti- Semitism knocks the Pollyanna good-will movements into a cocked hat? The battle around S h o l o un Asch's "The Nazarene" is still going on behind the closed doors of the Fm-ward Association, the body which controls the Jewish Daily Forward . . . Abe Cahan, editor and boss of the Jewish So- cialist daily, is trying to oust Asch entirely from the paper be- cause of what he, Cahan, calls Asch's "un-Jewish book". To the Palestine Pavilion at the World's Fair will go the rec- ord for the participation of dis- tinguished literary figures in its functions . . . Thomas Mann laid the cornerstone of the Pavilion, Albert Einstein and Emil Ludwig opened it and Lion Feuchtwan- ger, at a special function, closed it . . . This reminds us to tell you that, like the Palestine ex- hibit, the Polish Pavilion at the Fair also is trying to sell its ex hibit material to private individ- uals . . So what list do you think they used to circularize as prospective customers? . . You \ g ‘uh eo ss . ed it—the Jewish Who's Have you seen "Haven", the new book by Ludwig and Edna Lewisohn? . . .
