The Frail Succah Survives

Throughout the century, the frail Suc-
cah has been a symbol of a great spiritual
ideal which survived the onslaught of
barbarism and the elements of the jungle.
The Succah is a symbol not only of the
deep-rooted Hebraic teachings, : but also
of thoSe forces which have emerged- as
offshoots of the great religious force that
emanated from Jewish ranks.
This 8ticcah continues to survive. Syna-
gogues and churches may fall, whole com-
munities will be destroyed, entire nations
are temporarily uprooted, but they will
rise up again, as long as they adhere to
the law of Justice and Righteousness.
It is a small but in the midst of many
civilizations. It is a mere tent in the midst
of a jungle. But the spirit of it is strong.
It is a spirit that calls for courage and
self-respect. It will emerge when the pres-
ent attack upon many millions of inno-
cents is over. When this outburst of ter-
rorism is stopped the world will see the
dawn of a new era of freedom.
May this Succah, no matter how weak
its structure, never abandon its foundation
of strength and uncompromising adher-
ence to the principles of humanity.

A Pro-Nazi Quotes a Nazi

The new method of attack upon Jews
resorted to by anti-Semites is to question
our patriotism. And while doing that,
these charming supporters of the Hitler
idea oppose conscription, oppose the Pres-
ident's plans for rearmament and seek to
give comfort to the Nazis.
Dr. Jacob Thorkelson of Montana, who
still holds a seat in Congress, is one of
them. He does not like the Jews, he does
not like the President, he is opposed to
conscription. But he does like certain
people, and he picks for his friends the
bosom friends of Adolph Hitler. He has
not chosen Hitler himself, because he
knows the weakness of the Hitler idea in
this country and is cognizant of the fact
that the American people will repudiate
anyone who defends Hitler. However, in
one of his customary extensions of re-
marks in the Congressional Record he
quoted none other than Jacques Doriot,
the French Streicher.
Jacques Doriot is the person who was
selected by Hitler to be his spokesman
in France in putting into effect a violent
anti-Jewish program. Anyone who quotes
Doriot and endorses what he says might
just as well endorse the words of Hitler
.himself, of Streicher, of Goebbels, of Goer-
ing, of Quisling, of Seyss-Inquart. Thor-
kelson does that. In making use of the
wisdom of Doriot, Thorkelson spoke of
conscription and unburdened himself of
the following piece of stupidity: "Are we
conscripting an army to be transported to

Good News

There is encouraging news from Europe.
In Norway, students have destroyed
anti-Semitic signs, in defiance of Nazi
orders.
In Yugoslavia, teachers have protested
against the enforcement of decrees limit-
ing the number of Jewish students.
Here is glaring evidence that all de-
cency is not dead in Europe.
Every instance of this sort merely au-
gurs the approach of a better day for
mankind.
