-Sunday Morning
Meetings at Beth
Tefilo Emanuel

Boys and Young Men Will Join
for Weekday Services, Break-
fast and Discussion Groups

As an outgrowth of Emanuel
Mitzvah School, boys and young
men ranging in age front 16 to
25 have joined for a weekly
morning service, held every Sun-
(lay at 9 a. m. at Congregation
Beth Tefilo Emanuel, Taylor and
Woodrow Wilson Ayes. Prayers
are interrupted for the explana-
tion and discussion of salient
passages, and on holidays, Rosh
Chodesh and fasts the Torah is
read in keeping with the ritual.
Breakfast is served following the
services, and several study groups
are being formed to suit the
needs of the worshippers for
Jewish instruction. Rabbi M. J.
Wohlgelernter, spiritual leader of
the synagogue who initiated the
project, hopes to develop a large
and variegated attendance to
augment the initial group which
has been meeting for the past
few weeks.
In addition to the Sunday
morning function, boys and
young men are also invited to
special Sholosh S'udos gatherings
arranged every Saturday after-
noon. The program begins at 4
p. m. and includes the study of
the weekly portion of the Torah,
Minchah services and the tradi-
tional third meal of the Sabbath,
followed by Maariv and Hay-
dalah.

Unindentified American friends
have helped Lion Feuchtwanger,
eminent German-Jewish author,
to escape from the Gestapo in
France. The manuscript of
Feuchtwanger's latest book, "The

France and he does not know
whether he will be able to re-

Mrs. Feuchtwanger is in Lisbon
awaiting passage to come to this

Reports indicate that Franz
Werfel is also on the way to
this country, having escaped
from the clutches of the Nazis.

How Swedish Democracy
Works Topic of World
Adventure Series Lecture
Sunday

That a democracy can abolish
poverty, create jobs for all and
operate efficiently without sacri-
ficing the liberty of anyone has
been proved by Sweden, accord-
ing to Wilfrid Husband, world
traveler and student of interna-
tional affairs, who will give a
lecture, illustrated with natural
color motion pictures, on "Swe-
den — Where Human Values
Count," at the Detroit Institute
of Arts, Woodward at Kirby,
next Sunday afternoon, Oct. 13,
at 3:30.
"Sweden has abolished slums,
has raised farm prices without
raising the price of food, has cut
medical costs to a point where
one can have his appendix re-
moved for only $7.50 and in the
face of all this has created a
treasury surplus," says Mr. Hus-
band.
Mr. Husband's personal ap-
pearance in Detroit is sponsored
by the World Adventure Series,
the public lecture course at the
Detroit Institute of Arts. His
natural color motion pictures re-
veal the beautiful scenery of
Sweden and the business and so-
cial life of its people.
