EXTENDS BEST WISHES TO ALL JEWRY FOR A HAPPY NEW YEAR 5701 1940 iznzn rizit "Off the Capes of Deleware", a new book of 20 short stories by Benjamin W. Blandford, deals in informal fashion with American Jewish history, especially Jewish participation in the development of America. Just issued, the book was published from the pro- ceeds of the Ludwig Vogelstein Memorial Fund by the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, Cincinnati. A bibliography appended to "Off the Capes of Delaware" in- dicates extensive research which has provided the authentic his- torical background of Mr. Bland- ford's stories. Bound in blue cloth, the cover of the Blandford book presents the picture of a ship in full sail. Bernard Segal, well known Cin- cinnati artist is responsible for Illustrations. Dr. Emanuel Gamo- ran, educational director of the Union has written an editor's introduction to the volume. "Significant in these days when temporary dictatorial up- starts arise and tell us that only one class or one group of cer- tain beliefs, or blood, or what- not, are the only true-blue patri- ots," Mr. Blandford points out in his Preface," is the fact that in America all classes, of all religious, social and racial stocks cooperated to give us our Amer- ica. Mr. Blandford, a non-Jew, goes on to state that through the pages of his book, he has "sought to bring to life the men and women of all classes in the his- toric past and show what they thought and said, and what they did and died for, but particularly to impress on the reader's mind that Jew cooperated with Gentile, and Gentile with Jew to the glory of a triumphant democracy." In the editor's introduction, Dr. Gamoran states that "in writing a series of stories of American Jewish life—the first, as far as I know, intended for people above the elementary school age—Mr. Blandford has rendered Jewish education a ge- nuine service." Further information about "Off the Capes of Delaware" may be secured from the Union of American Congregations, Mer- chants Bldg., Cincinnati. "Let There Be Light" "So that the banner of Light, Justice and Truth shall become the banner of all the people of the earth as symbol- ized in the seven-fold Shining Sun— The Menorah." ROTTENBERG, President. WAR By SUROWECIINO Human misery and death Is its story The prize fought for used to be gold and glory. But now, war Is the lowest of human expreskon For it, only the modern Teutons still have a passion. Children were always told of war heroes and braves But seldom of Its misery, death and graves. Now these children are part of the game It certainly puts the modern hero to sin and shame. How much longer will we allow our children, whom so dearly we love To be crushed by bombs from above. Science, too, has done Its share For this gross brutality In modern warfare. But thanks also to science, war has lost its glamour Golden shields, trumpets and chariots are no more. Powder, steel and concrete are now Its tools To war, go men to be slaughtered like fools. Tyrants also have changed, they new make quick decisions. They command to kill for their pleasure and selfish ambit ions. The Officers and Members of the Bnai David Ladies' Auxiliary Extend Their Best Wishes for a Year of Happiness to the Officers and Members, to the Congregation at Large, and to the Entire Community. MRS. Z. NEEDLE, President. A HAPPY NEW YEAR! It all Is like a nightmare, difficult to comprehend For God's sake, People, let's give the innocent a hand. Let's stop the Teutons, for they do not know what they are fighting for.
