As we—a people whose con- scious memory goes beyond the recorded history of any existing branch of the human family— prepare to usher in the advent of the year 5701 of the Hebrew calendar, the issue is sharply and clearly drawn: The outcome of the struggle will determine whe- ther light, justice and freedom, as advocated by the Prophets of Israel, or darkness, cruelty and oppression, as represented by Nazism and paganism, are to be enthroned as the masters of the world's destiny. There is strength, hope and comfort in the delineation of the issue. Right will prevail over might! In its long history our people has wit- nessed and survived the rise and fall of brutal tyrannies that sought similar world domination through the crushing of the spirit of freedom and of its standard- bearers. Our martyr history is the classic example of stubborn resistance to evil and steadfast and unflinching hope for the vic- tory of right. The severer the crisis the greater the suffering, the deeper and the stronger has become the hope of the Rem- nant of Israel; the more numer- ous became the ranks of those who accepted responsibilities for the outcome of the struggle. In this struggle, the righting of the wrongs that have been inflicted upon Jewry and the up- building of Eretz Israel occupy a pivotal part. While bombs are falling from the sky, we must and shall tenaciously cling to the spiritual values which give life, and to the soil in which our past and future are deeply rooted. As we usher in the year 5701, we rededicate ourselves to the de- fense — despite the ferocity of the onslaught and the temporary setbacks—of the spiritual fort- resses which guarded, protected and sustained us in the past. Taking up these tasks of defense, we squarely face the responsibil- ities of this grave hour. Together with the forces of democracy in the world, we stand guard over its bastions among which Eretz Israel is one of the few remaining fortresses. Hoping, working and struggling for the ultimate triumph of our cause, we face the immediate responsi- bilities of the hour. Of vital importance among these is the wartime program of the Jewish National Fund in Palestine. In this spirit, we of the Jewish Na- tional Fund are redoubling our efforts—and call upon American Jewry to respond to this call— for the wartime task of the Ker- en Kayemeth which merits the support and cooperation of every Jew: More land for more food for more people in Eretz Israel!
