THIS IS A TIME FOR RENEWAL
OF THE BATTLE FOR LIBERTY

Jewish Attitude Toward
Prayer

By THE HON. JOHN J. DINGELL
Member of Congress

The institution of prayer, ac-
cording to Rabbi Israel Bettan,
"is founded on man's consious
need of communion with God.
Prayer is thus the soul of man
holding converse with the soul of
the universe. Prayer, when not
a mere gesture but an actual
heart-experience, enables us to
break through the iron wall of
materiality and reach the im-
mediate presence of God's spirit."

I consider it a privilege once again to greet my Jewish friends
on the occasion of Rosh Hashonah—the sacred New Year day.
The past year was marked by many struggles. It was the be-
ginning of a more invigorated battle for justice, for liberty, against
Nazism and all displays of un-Americanism.
The coming year must call for a renewal and strengthening
of this effort.
The fight for justice is unending.
Let us all—fighters of liberty—dedicate ourselves to the eno
that the American principles should live and that democracy should
be supported throughout the world.

Merger of Jewish Education Association
With Jewish Education Committee
Of New York Is Now Completed

The Jewish Education Associ-
ation (JEA), which has been
serving Jewish religious educa-
tion in New York for the past
19 years, has now merged with
the Jewish Education Committee
of New York, of which Justice
Samuel I. Rosenman is president,

according to an announcement
issued by Harry H. Liebovitz,
president of the Jewish Education
Association and Bernard Semel,
honorary secretary. The merger
came into effect as of the be-
ginning of this month.
In accordance with the terms
of the union, the Jewish Educa-
tion Association has turned over
all its assets to the new body as
well as the personnel of its staff,
and has received representation
on the Jewish Education Com-
mittee in accordance with an
agreement reached at the time of
the launching of the new body
in October 1939. Ivriah, the wo-
men's division of the Association,
has become the women's division
of the new body.

Genus of Jewish Religion Is
Called Democratic

According to Rabbi Solomon B.
Freehof, Judaism "raised the
status of women above that pre-
valent in the surrounding lands
in the Orient . . . Its rabbis were
really laymen who were scholars,
whose tasks were not sacerdotal
but jurisprudential . . . And Ju-
daism was the first religious tra-
dition to encourage and provide
for universal democratic educa-
tion."

Three Blind Mice,
Three Blind Mice,
See how they run,
Without any gun.
Adolf, Benito, and Joe,
No place to hide, no place to go.

They took enough rope, to hang
them well.
And after they're hung, they'll
go to Hell.
And the world will say that's
nice,
For the poor little, Three Blind
Mice.

Three Blind Mice,
Three Blind Mice,
Mussolini was one,
That son of a gun.
Hitler was two, he hated the Jew.
Stalin was three, he imprisoned
the free.
The poor little brats, they'll die
like rats.
And the world will say that's
nice,
For the poor little, Three Blind
Mice.

WE TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY OF WISHING

"Ruth," a Children's Opera in
three scenes with text from the
Bible by Lawrence Morton of Los
Angeles, Calif., has just been
published by the Union of Ameri-
can Hebrew Congregations, Cin-
cinnati. The opera was published
from the proceeds of the Her-
mine Schonthal Memorial Publica-
tion Fund established by the late
Joseph Schonthal of Columbus, O.
Requiring five leading singers
for the roles of Ruth, Orpah,
Naomi, Boaz and the Head Rea-
per in charge of Boaz's fields, the
opera affords opportunities for
choral support as well as instru-
mental accompaniment.
Because of the timelessness of
the story of Ruth, the opera may
be used at any season of the year
by school or club groups.
Information about the new pub-
lication may be secured from the
Union of American Hebrew Con-
gregations, Merchants Bldg., Cin-
cinnati, 0.
