With heave tremulous heart
Jewry approaches the coming
Rosh Hashanah, which in the true
sense of the word may become
"Yom Hadin," a "Day of Judg-
ment," not alone for the indiv-
idual but also for Israel, yea, for
mankind at large, determining
the bloom and doom of whole
peoples and nations.
The puerile and inquisitive
question of other years as to
what the entering year shall
bring to us? becomes in the
light of the catastrophical events
of recent days one of tremend-
ous importance and significance
for the welfare of humanity.
Little did we dream on Rosh
Hashonah a year ago, while as-
sembled in our Synagogues and
Houses of Worship, listening
there to the blast of the Shofar,
that in the short space of twelve
months many peoples and na-
tions, hitherto considered and
revered as the outposts of human
civilization, as the very sanctuar-
ies of human Liberty, as the cra-
dles and laboratories of a new
and more righteous social order
—that before another New Year
shall dawn upon mankind these
vanguards and strongholds of
human progress and civilization
shall become prey and victim of
the most ruthless, cruel regime
that ever disgraced the pages of
history! Little has the brooding
genius of mankind conceived and
apprehended the last Rosh Has-
hona, that before the year shall
run to its end, of all the power-
ful and flourishing democracies
of Europe, who guided and ruled
the destiny of Humanity, only
one shall be left unscathed and
unconquered and that this one
surviving democracy shall be en-

The extent of the Jewish world tragedy has not yet disclosed
itself and it is impossible at this moment to forese the forms of
Jewish life in the various countries of enemy domination. Even the
role of Palestine is far from clear. Of immediate concern, how-
ever, is the obvious lethargy in American Jewry and the prevalence
of a sense of futility, with the consequent let-down in activity in
contribution for our people in its distress.
A large section of Jewry indulges in the rationalization that
in the world catastrophy the Jewish situation is only incidental and
therefore unimportant. Although Jewish interests coincide with
those of decency, democracy and civilization, there is no gainsaying
the fact that the Jews form a minority group with special problems,
irrespective of the economic and political organization of the lands
of their residence.
Common decency demands that the Jews fortunate enough to
be in America either through their own immigration or that of their
ancestors should use their utmost efforts to prevent from degrada-
tion and annihilation the Jews suffering oppression in other coun-
tries and the Jews escaping from oppression to America.
Let us hope that in the coining year American Jewry will more
nearly realize its responsibilities.

And little has Jewry imagined,
while it poured out its soul in
fervent silent prayer before the
Throne of Mercy, and nothing
was further from its thought
and concepts than that while
600,000 Jews lived at that time
in the Nazi controlled countries,
at the mercy or rather at the
hatred of their arch-enemies, at
this New Year many millions of
our brethren will be helpless and
prostrate under the heel of our
ruthless foes, subject to all op-
pression and indignities which
perverted minds could conceive!
How vast and unsurmountable
is the distance and difference be-
tween this sad blood-drenched
actuality and the exalted objec-
tives for the realization of which
Israel prays on its great Holy
Days, in the most solemn season
of the year!
We shall quote only a few re-
verberations and echoes from our
sacred Holy Day lithurgy:
"May Thou, 0 Lord, rule alone
in Thy glorious splendor over
mankind."
"May each being know that
Thou hast formed it and each
creature, that Thou hast created
it and may all of them establish
a covenant of Brotherhood to
serve Thee with perfect heart."
"May the Kingdom of wicked-
ness pass and perish away like
smoke."
Will indeed the agonized God-
intoxicated prayers of Israel, the
most fervent hopes of enlighten-
ed mankind, the welter of blood
which change into crimson riv-
ers the battlefield; will the tears,
afflictions, suffering and torture
of the elect, will the dispair and
anguish of fathers and mothers,
will they be able and powerful
to fill the gaps between the Di-
vine visions of our prayer book
and the savage brutality and bar-
barism which mar the face of
the earth and disgrace God's most
noble creature— Man —in our
days?
Will impenetrable and unfath-
omable Divine Omnipotence and
Justice exact a new era of Right-
eousness, of Morality, an era of
Messianic Brotherhoon, Love and
Peace from the present tribula-
tions and sufferings of Mankind?
"Watchman, what is with the
night, what shall bring forth the
night?"
Let us approach the golden
gates of Prayer at our Holy
Days with implicit Faith and
Trust that it will be so!
Let us lift our hearts and
hands to the Lord of all Life
and Being that it shall be so!
