P. A. Describes Its Progress in Many Fields NEW YORK — Every activity to preserve and expand the Jew- ish homeland in Palestine is re- ceiving new impetus as a result of war events, it is emphasized in a review of progress issued here by the United Palestine Ap- peal, America's fund-raising in- strument for the upbuilding of the Jewish homeland, whose na- tional chairman is Dr. Abba Hil- lel Silver. Although the field of war has conic, closer to the borders of Palestine, with Italian planes hay- ing flown over Haifa and Tel Aviv, and with the opening this week of recruitment for a Jewish unit in the British regiment of Buffs stationed in the Middle East, the Jewish Agency for Pal- estine and the Jewish National Fund have gone forward, on an enlarged scale, to preserve the Jewish position and to permit additional thousands of Jews to enter Palestine from hate-torn Europe. The Highlights Highlights of the review of progress, issued to coincide with the launching of fall campaigns for the United Jewish Appeal throughout the country, show: (a) that 18,000 Jews have en- tered Palestine in the past year and that 6,000 others are now on their way from various ports; (b) that the relief needs, arising out of unemployment and war- time restrictions and prepara- tions, have thrust new responsi- bilities on the Jewish Agency; (c) that the Jewish Agency is enabling scores of new enter- prises to get started, thus pro- viding employment for many workers and strengthening the economic foundations of the country; (d) that sonic 38,000 dunams of land were purchased by the Jewish National Fund in a ten-month period, and that tens of thousands of additional du- nams are available for purchase. It is the spirit of the Jews of Palestine which receives the greatest emphasis in the review. SEASON'S GREETINGS Conferences To mobilize American Jewry's support for intensified Palestine activities, the United Palestine Appeal is arranging a series of regional meetings: to answer questions on Palestine's present status and to imbue American Jews with that spirit of faith and courage which characterizes Palestine Jewry. These conferences includes: Providence, R. I. on Sept. 29; Rochester, N. Y., on Oct. 20; Washington, D. C. on Oct. 27; Los Angeles, Calif. on Nov. 24, and San Francisco, Calif., on Dec. 1. Speakers at these conferences will include James G McDonald, chairman of the President's Ad- visory Committee for Political Refugees, Dr. Nahum Goldmann, member of the Jewish Agency Executive, former representative to the League of Nations at Ge- neva, Louis Lipsky, chairman of the Executive Committee of the United Palestine Appeal and others. 1940 5701 A Happy New Year to All American Jew s Challenged To Equal Palestine Jewry's Heroism A challenge to the Jews of America to "measure up the crisis in Palestine" is sounded in an editorial featured in the U.P.A. Report, monthly publica- tion issued by the United Pales- tine Appeal, American Jewry's fund-raising instrument for the rebuilding of the Jewish home- land in Palestine. Emphasizing the heroic strug- gle in which the 500,000 Jews of Palestine are engaged — to Preserve the foundations already laid and to make room for thou • sands of other Jews — the edi- torial declares that the "Jews in America are given a unique op- portunity at this hour to do more than stand by and watch fear- fully for the outcome of this titanic struggle." -American Jews are reminded that all who are helping Great Britain to hold off and ultima- tely to defeat Hitler are strug- gling for the values with which our own country's future is bound up." The editorial adds: "Ours is the privilege—and the Solemn obligation—to give match- less support to the Jews of Pal- estine." One of Ned's Newest Units N E D'S North •n.1 0%.
