We are all mindful of PL. 1130 the tragedy of millions of Jews abroad; we must face facts and realize that intolerance and pre- judice are making inroads in this country. We know that attacks on minority groups are threats to our national democratic ideal which is based Rosh Hashonah Greetings on respect for the freedom, the liberty, the dig- nity, and equality of all minority groups. But it is not a sufficient defense of our way of life to be intolerant of intolerance. We must work and we must have faith to inspire us to work for our religious and political ideals. We have faith. We must recognize that these parasites on the body politic feed on discontent and exploit dissatisfaction in order to foster hatred to serve their own ends. The youth unable to get a job and the family man facing penniless old-age are always the nucleii of those dissatisfied groups ready to listen to dema- gogues offering crack-pot utopias. The man who has a job with unemployment compensation bene- fits to protect him against suffering from its loss, the man who may find hope and help towards a new job through the employment service, and the man who can look forward to security and in- dependence because of old-age and survivors' in- surance all have a degree of security. They are not malcontents and they do not hate easily. They have the time and the disposition to consider issues critically. I cannot emphasize too strongly, therefore, that the salvation of democracy and minority groups rests in the continuation of so- , cial progress which will eradicate want and in- security. By removing discontent springing from these sources we can make ourselves invulnerable to hate-mongers within and to threats from be- yond our borders. For this reason, I profoundly believe that in carrying on the program for unemployment com- pensation, employment services, old-age and sur- vivors' insurance ,the Civilian Conservation Corps, and the National Youth Administration, we are entrusted with work which is the keystone of our internal defense of democracy and of the pro- tection of minority rights. As you rededicate yourselves to your faith and your ideals on this Rosh Hashonah I am proud and privileged to give you reassurance that we who work in the Government also renew our ef- forts to root out the present anxieties and fears of insecurity which breed threats to those of your faith and to all Americans. In this program of internal defense your Gov- ernment works shoulder to shoulder with private social agencies such as those of which Detroit may well be proud. We are mindful of the aid and the strength for democracy contributed by the Detroit Jewish Community Council, the Child Placement Bureau, the Social Service Bureau, the Home for the Aged, and the North End Clinic, to mention but a few of Detroit's splendid social service organizations. Thus, strengthened within our gates, together we may face the world and the New Year with confidence, pride, and high purpose. It is my sin- cere hope and earliest prayer that we shall de-. stroy the forces of darkness and hate. May the Jewish Community of Detroit prosper and con- tinue to contribute to the City, the State, and the Nation by its intelligent citizenship, its adherence to a rich heritage, and its loyal Americanism. It is with this spirit and with faith in this ideal that we greet the New Year.
