Issued on the Occasion of the Observance of Annual
Education Month of the United
Hebrew Schools
The present is the anvil upon which the future is forged.
We, in this day, have to form the morrow, while encircled
by darkness and threatened by doom. A world is in flames.
Ours is the duty to see that the consuming fires of the
present do not draw into their midst the hopes, the values,
th e ideal s which ca n alone promise a new dawn.
Greater is the task which rests upon the parent of
today than perhap s ever before. For his is the task in a
da y of crumbling and ruin to transmit the enduring faith and
abiding value s to his children.
This duty rests with even greater immediacy upon the
Jewish parent. For who is there in all the land who lives in
such intimac y with traged y and stark desolation as the Jew-
ish people? Where else have the flames mounted as high,
and consumed as fully as in the Jewish quarter? In whose
heart are sorrow and concern likely to take up residence as
fully as in the heart of the Jew?
And yet if there is one lesson above all others t o be
gleaned from Israel's harvest of experience and teaching,
it is this—A new day cometh, a day of peace when "the
sun of righteousness shall arise with healing its wings." Out
of th e crucible of suffering, a new tenderness and a renewed
spirit shall emerge. That faith is our fortress. It is our
guarantee of deathlessness.
Where can the Jewish child learn this lesson, Indis-
pensable for his character, dignity and hope? Where can he
shelter against the incessant bombardment of fear and des-
pair? Only in the realm of the Jewish spirit, in the power
of Torah, and study and faith.
It was a realistic and practical minister in Great Brit-
ain's cabinet who said, "This war will be won because of
spirit, even more than because of arms." How much truer is
this in the case of the Jew.
We appeal to every Jewish parent not to allow his
child to be educated only by headlines that tell a story of
terror and anguish. Every Jewish child should know of the
courage and idealism of Israel! Every Jewish child should
be nourished b y the eternal springs of Torah! Every Jewish
child should be innoculated against defeatism and terror!
This vary day arrange for the Jewish education of your child.
In this solemn month of the Jewish year we urge upon
you your inescapable obligation. Help your child to be not
a victim of fear but an heir of hope; not a prisoner of
uncertainty, but a soldier for right and truth.
Our faith will yet be justified. For us and our children
the words of the prophet will assume more vivid meaning.
For have we not been told
"No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper
And every tongue that shall rise against thee in
judgment thou shalt condemn.
This.ls the heritage of the servants of the Lord
And their due reward from Me, saith the Lord."

THE ACE
AVIATION ALCOHOL IS BEING
PRODUCED FROM SOYA BEANS
IN A PALESTINIAN COLONY
REHOBOTH (Palcor Agency)
—Soya beans containing 50 per
cent of oil usable for aviation
alcohol have been successfully
cultivated by the constantly ex-
panding Jewish Agency Experi-
mental Station here, according to
a statement issued by its direc-
tor., Prof. Isaac Eleazar Wilkan-
sky (Volcani).
The government has advanced
a loan of £7,000 to be used in
cultivation of the bean during
the next 15 years, he declared.
Six hundred dunams were culti-
vated in 1940; next year the
Station hopes to plan 20,000 du-
nams, he added.
It is only a year since soya
beans were first successfully
grown in Palestine by Jacob Go-
vernik of Tel Aviv, who then of-
fered the seed free of charge to
farmers. At that time the chief
products of the soya bean were
listed as milk, cakes, biscuits
and rusks.
In the meantime, however, as
the European War progressed it
became increasingly important
that Palestine become self -suffi-
cient in the production of alco-
hol, much of width had formerly
been imported from Holland. It
was then decided to expand the
existing facilities for alcohol pro-
duction. First new formulae were
devised whereby the conversion
of citrus by-products into alco-
hol became feasible. But more
alcohol and of different types
was needed.
Thus the Experimental Station
under its gifted director, who
since 1909 has been the chief
agricultural experimental expert
of the Zionist Organization,
turned to the newly cultivated
soya bean, with the results de-
scribed.
The government loan of £7,000
on this alcohol-producing vege-
table is in line with earlier en-
couragement given local produc-
tion of this vital distillate. Last
spring the excise on local alcohol
sold to hospitals was waived, and
with this encouragement local
production was greatly spurred.

Ensure Their Chances of Success
Children of early school age, or even younger,
reach their late 'teens and early twenties almost
before one knows it. Then comes the day when
a college or higher technical education is neces-
sary. Why not make sure now that funds for
their education will be ready when needed?
I will be glad to show you how it can be done
in a simple practical manner.
