tians who have not yet recog-
nized the problem in its true
sense. But the volume gives due
credit to many clergymen, in-
cluding the Pope, who have in-
terpreted anti-Semitism as a sin
for Christians. For instance 65

to Fight Anti-Semitism are quot-
ed as saying that "anti-Semitism
in the United States is a serious
threat to the principles of de-
mocracy and Christianity."
This book also offers a chal-
lenge to the Jew who is critic-
ized for having failed to pursue
a proper course of action in the
battle for democracy and against
anti-Semitism. The chapter "The
Sin of the Jews," dealing with
this portion of the question,
should be studied by every Jew-
ish leader as a lesson for future
action.

Offensive to Christianity

Utterances by Christians are
used as evidence that anti-Sem-
itism is called anti-Christian in
the sense that it is repugnant
to the spirit of Christianity, that
is, like every other kind of race
prejudice, offensive to the first
principles of the Christian faith."
Mr. Samuels adds that "anti-
Semitism is not anti-Christian in
the sense that it is un-Christian.

ment to put an end to the
Christian episode in human his-
tory. While all other forms of

hatred are lapses from Chris-
tian practices, anti-Semitism is
the conspiratorial, implacable
campaign against Christ the

But Mr. Samuel does not stop
here. He quotes Father Hanley
Furfey of the Catholic Univer-
sity of America: "If your mother
were a Jew you would not tol-
erate the wholesale crimes of
speech and violence being com-
mitted today against the Jewish
race. Well, your mother was a
Jew. Mary, the mother of all
mankind, was a Jew; and when
insults and epithets are hurled
and crimes committed against
the Jews, they are committed
against your mothe•." Mr. Sam-

the myth of the forged "Proto-
cols of the Elders of Zion." An-
other, reproduced in this issue
in full, is the fascinatinm story
of the Baal Shem Tov and an
explanation of the astounding
similarity of Chassidism with the
spirit of the New Testament.
The Pagan Philosophy
The pagan philosophy of Naz-
ism-Fascism is described by Mr.
Samuel in the chapter "The
Original Culprits" as follows:
"The individual superstitions
of Nazism-Fascism regarding the
habits and powers of the Jews
are reproductions of the ancient
Pagan superstitions regarding the
habits and powers of the an-

Samuel's "The Great Hatred"
will have to apologize for brev-
ity. It is impossible to do jus-
tice to the entire book in a col-
umn or two-column review. Each
chapter in the book is worth a
review in itself. It is a mag-
nificent evaluation of hatred,
and especially of hatred of the
Jew. Christians and Jews should
read it. Priests, ministers and
rabbis should speak about it
from their pulpits. Every library
should have the book. Every
legislator should read it as a
means of acquainting himself
with a serious human problem.
Mr. Samuel's plea for justice
is one of the great contributions
made in our time to the fight for
human decency.
